I'm considering taking the 3-hour "behind the scenes" tour during my trip in December. Is it good?

Do you mean the Backstage Safari tour? It's excellent! I took it about 10 years ago. You get a great look at the nutrition center (where they prepare the animals' food) and some of the animal holding areas (we got to see a rhino and a giraffe "up close and personal"). We also got to see a baby gator (they brought it into the room with us at the end of the tour). Now I think they also include the veterinary hospital in the tour.

I think it's totally worth the money. But I'm an animal lover - I volunteer at my local zoo, so I may be biased!

We loved it.
We got to go to the veterinary section.
It was all very interesting. Think we might do it again soon.

Thank you both for your quick replies :)

That is what I was asking about and I've decided to go for it. I love animals and had already planned the whole day for AK, so taking the tour will be a wonderful addition for my day.

Excellent tour! Enjoy.

Don't forget the discounts....DVC, AP and AAA (sometimes) 15%, Disney Visa 20%.

This is a great tour. One of the best at WDW. I got to do it solo, as the only guest, and got the VIP treatment. I even got to pet and FEED a black rhino. You are gonna love this tour. The other (on stage) AK tour is not as enjoyable as Backstage Safari, IMO.

My girlfriend and I just did this tour last month and I must say it was wonderful. We both love animals and Animal Kingdom in general, and the tour was even more inspiring and enjoyable than we imagined it would be..

We'll probably do it again next year..:)

After doing this tour, we decided that we will do the Wild Africa Trek during our September trip, as we've developed a great fondness for the Animal Kingdom in general and want to see it all...

Another question about the Backstage Safari - does anyone know when I can book the reservation? My trip is December 14-17th, with my plans being to spend the 16th at AK. When I looked at the tour, it was showing "No time available." I had to back the calendar up to October before it would show times. So does that mean I need to wait until closer to try to make a reservation? :confused3

Should be 180 days. Give 407-939-8687 a call in the morning.

And welcome to the dis, marian.

Booked my Backstage Safari tour this evening! :yay:

Also figured out while on phone making reservation that the reason it wasn't showing times available was I was looking on a Tuesday and they don't do the tours on Tuesdays. No problem - made it for Monday, December 15th at 8:30 in the morning. I can't wait!
