Animal Kingdom - more than just a zoo?

It's pretty much just a zoo.

Just kidding, it's awesome!!!
Kilimanjaro safari's is an experience you'll get nowhere else in the world outside of Africa. The rest of the park is awesome. I might pick a second day at MK over AK, but not a third day for sure.

Love AK !! Such a great park !!! Everytime we see "Nemo" I can't help but think that with a little tweaking, this show would be a hit on Broadway !! ( it's the NYer in me !!).

The score is so great !!

The theming in Africa and Asia is amazing. I love walking from the safari to Everest and just marveling at all the detail.

Thanks for the input, guys!
This might be a strange question, but what if you need to leave in the middle of a show (like the Lion King or Nemo)? I ask this only because my 3 yr old son sometimes gets upset during live music, and I'm not sure if he will be able to sit through it. I'd hate to be disruptive to the other patrons. Or maybe this happens all the time?

I'm gonna be honest about AK, when I first visit on September 2014, 3 attractions were closed and we were very tired after a marathon of parks, so I liked the park but not that much as I thought I would do.
Last year during my trip in November we spent the whole day at it with all attractions open and it was A BLAST! Amazing and a great park! One of the most beautiful ones, specially because of the nature and green areas, it's refreshing! I think you definitely should reserve a whole day for it.

About the shows, you can always see some castmembers standing at some strategic areas checking if everything is alright during the show, just make an eye contact with them or call them to help you leave out, it's normal and it happens, specially cause there's a lot of small children on those shows. Just be careful not to leave without checking if there's no actors walking/running/performing near the audience (it happens in both concerts).

While I could never imagine a single trip without a day visit to AK (its our favorite), I do understand that your family will probably get more enjoyment from the MK for an extra day. If your kids love animals, then they will certainly love AK.

Definitely 2 of the best shows on Disney property in Lion King & Nemo, the Safari is so amazing, the tree of life is also amazing. HOWEVER, there are some scary rides that are headliners that they can not really enjoy like Everest, Tough to Be A Bug, and Dinosaur.

Comparing this to a zoo is like calling Ruth Chris Steak House a hamburger joint since they both serve beef. I still think for this trip, MK really serves you best, and for future trips, make sure to schedule for AK.

I consider AK an excellent theme park first. It just happens to have some animals as secondary attractions.

Last month we visited AK for the first time. I (naively, haha) made a super limited touring plan and figured it would be a half day there at best and then we'd hop somewhere else.

We stayed from rope drop until closing time and still didn't get to do everything there. There is so much to do and see and experience. I can't wait to go back and catch all of the things we missed. Don't miss it!

As others have said, it is not a zoo at all. There are animals, but not really that many. It is a Disney park that has animals on attraction as well. :)

Yeah. I don't know why they call them mini-shows. Nemo itself is nearly an hour long (and awesome!)

Ok, I LOVE AK and agree with all the Nahtazu posts, but. . . .

I felt really bad when I traveled with friends once and encouraged them to go to AK. . . I was so bummed when we met up at Epcot later, eager to hear about their day - they had hated AK! Although it is so much more than a zoo, it DOES have some zoo stuff and far fewer rides than MK. My friends are apparently very ride-centric, not much impressed with the theming and atmosphere, not fans of most shows, so they thought it was a waste of a day. Now I'm very careful about recommending it.

I say it is Nahtazu, and so much more, but if you really dislike zoos, maybe look long and hard at all AK offers to make sure it interests you before committing to a day there!

Yes, as a previous poster said, there are CMs around, just signal one of them and they'll show you out. The Lion King show isn't very long (30ish mins?) and so colourful and entertaining, your son will probably be enthralled. The theatre is quite small. There's even a little pre-show entertainment.

Wise to wonder, and yes you can sit near the end of a row and get the attention of a CM to exit if needed. I would expect those high energy, very entertaining shows to hold the interest of all ages, but my 2.5 y.o. nephew surprised me last trip. He had complete FITS at every show! I don't know whether the volume, dark theater, or something else bothered him. We *think* he was angry about being expected to sit still - we think mom should have let him stand, pace in front of just our family, wiggle as we waited for the show to start, but she insisted on making him sit down and he screamed and thrashed through everything. You never know what your kids will do! Good idea to leave yourself an out!

We love AK. We spent over a 1/2 day last visit there (we only left because we had a 1/2 day at HS planned to see Osborne lights). Our visit before that we spent 1 1/2 days there. Our kids love it. I doubt you'd be disappointed.

Our family did 1 day at EP last visit, and said we could have skipped it.

For us, AK is a half day park, with or without small kids. We get there at RD and do everything we want to do, eat lunch and leave. Now with ROL coming, this might change the way we do AK, but I am looking forward to seeing it! I would at least give it half a day, especially if you have never done it before.

A few weeks back I wrote a long post to someone asking whether they should visit AK.

I absolutely love it, but I also can see why some people don't.

So here I will paste my long response from last time, in hopes that it can provide some insight on whether it's a good fit for you.

Whether you should go depends completely on what you're into. I think animal kingdom is probably the park that has the most divergent opinions about it. That's because you "get it" or you don't.

That's not a right or wrong thing, just different ways of enjoying parks.

So the question is, what type of person are you?

Here is who I think would be unlikely to like animal kingdom very much:

people who are very focused on the very Disney-est of Disney experiences. Don't think princesses, Mickey, fantasyland. Sure, they work those elements in, but for my money those things could disappear and animal kingdom wouldn't change very much.

People who are all about the rides. Animal kingdom is my favorite park, and I've never ridden expedition Everest. I'm lukewarm on dinosaur, and bug. My favorite attractions aren't even really rides in the classical sense.

As far as the themepark experience goes, AK is almost the anti-Magic Kingdom. Not because I don't love both, but because I think they're the furthest away from each other on the spectrum of what Disney is about. (for what it's worth, Magic Kingdom is my second favorite park.)

OK then, who is likely to be in the animal kingdom?

The obvious one are animal lovers. Flights of wonder is an amazing bird show (really). The Safari is fantastic. For instance, I absolutely geek out about those experiences. My mother-in-law... She could take or leave it. She prefers her animals with barbecue sauce.

The second thing that I don't hear enough about are people who love culture. And by that I mean culture from the anthropology perspective, not the big C culture. I love the look and feel of the different lands, that are so richly themed to look and feel like villages from developing nations. Cinderella's Castle is about transporting you to an imaginary fantasyland. Harambe market is about transporting you to Africa. And then you got all of the Asian section. Just think of Disney Imagineering applied to bringing distant cultures. to life rather than fantasy realms. And unlike Epcot, where it's more of a world fair feel, animal kingdom is more of an "I can almost imagine I'm there" feel. (within the realistic parameters of an Orlando theme park :) )

If you prefer a well done French or Italian dish then animal kingdom is not your spot. If you get excited about the idea of counter service that presents interesting and unique food from more exotic cultures, then animal kingdom is a good fit. (again, within the parameters….)

Finally, what type of physical space do you like? Animal kingdom is all about vegetation. It has a very natural feelabout it, including the oppressive heatsometimes!

For me, perhaps the quintessential animal kingdom experience that separates those of us who love it from those of us who don't are the two walking trails.

Being on a jungle path that winds through vegetation and then coming to a little bridge that I can cross and see gorillas that seem to be right there was, for me, a breathtaking experience. Walking through the ruins of an Asian culture while observing Tigers was fascinating.

To me, animal kingdom is the type of place that hits home with people who really love nature, culture, and the aesthetic experience of just being in aplace. The rides and shows, for me, are wonderful compliments to the primary experience.

I think that's why some people view animal kingdom is a half-day park where others of us can't imagine trying to do it in less than a full day.

Again, that's not a good or a bad thing, it's just a better fit for certain types of people.

So there you go! For some people animal kingdom is an absolutely positivelyunmissable park. For other people I can completely understand why it's a half-day or or maybe not even worth going.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I getpassionate about the animal kingdom!
