Animal Kingdom Lodge

We (me, husb, 4 adult "kids" & 21 mos grandaughter) will be arriving Sun 12/1 afternoon for stay at BCV. Will not be going to park that day...thought we would go to AKL for dinner 5pm (have res.) to see the sights...had heard you can see animals in Savanah from lodge. Thought it would be cool for grandau. There's no easy way from BCV to AKL (BCV to MGM to AKL)....has anyone been there...is it worth the trip with a toddler? Can you see animals from the Lodge? How's the food at BOMA....we are not an "adventursome" group...is there only African food...or can my "typical american type" appetities find something they will like?
HELP...I don't want to start the trip off with a disaster (especially since the budget is tight this trip)

You can definitely see the animals from various places around the lodge. Once you enter the lobby, go straight back towards the huge (several stories high) window. Down the steps and out to the main savannah public viewing area. There are also windows at many points along the corridors where you can get a view and a lounge were you can see another savannah. Animals are also viewable from the pool area and there is a small playground that your granddaughter might like. The pool area is just outside of the restaurants.

Boma is a great dinner buffet and there are indeed several exotic foods to try. For the less adventurous, you should be able to find something good to eat. You should at least try a little of everything. And save room for dessert!

If you have a car, you can just drive over to AKL. You shouldn't have any problems at the gate.

It's definitely worth the trip to AKL. Boma's is really good, lots of different foods to pick from and I'm very picky. You should see lots of animals from the main viewing area. Be sure to check out the gift shop, it's really cool. As for getting there, I'd either take BCV-MGM-AKL, BCV-AK-AKL or BCV-EPCOT- AKL, if going by bus. On the way back you may have to take AKL-DTD-BCV or AKL-EPCOT-BCV. Enjoy!

AKL is definately worth the trip to see. We didn't care much for Boma though. We were able to find food we liked well enough, but didn't feel we got our money's worth there. If it were me, I'd still go, see the animals and grab some burgers or a pizza from Mara, the foodcourt. The portions are large so you could easily split like a double burger & fries with a child and have plenty. JMHO
