She came in to record that song as a safety as they originally thought another character might sing it. She was also concerned that her voice wasn't right for it at her age. She did one take. It was used in the move with zero objections.
My mom never missed an episode of Murder She Wrote and since we only had 1 TV for much of my childhood that meant neither did we if we were inside. RIP Mrs. Potts.
R.I.P.--I loved Murder She Wrote, and she will always be Mrs Potts in Beauty and the Beast, and her beautiful voice will always be singing the title song when any of us watch it
If you've never seen the original Manchurian Candidate, watch it in her honour; she was unbelievably good in that. (And only a couple of years older than the actor playing her son; yet she was totally believable as the mother of a grown man in his thirties.)
She was also really wonderful in Gaslight, her first American film at age 19; she was nominated for a Supporting Actress Oscar for it.
It's funny that a woman whose real disposition was very sunny was *so* good at playing sinister characters.
