Does anyone order the boxes from Angel Food Ministries? I was wondering about the quality of the items they pack in there.

This past week has been an eye opener for me. I have really realized how quickly your money can just disappear and how you can suddenly not be able to afford groceries. So, I am looking at ways to help out and save money.

Thanks.

For a few years I volunteered to pack out these boxes. I would say you could do better to save by shopping at an Aldi or similiar store. Honestly these are not the healthiest foods.
Thinking back a regular box would be like 4 frozen low end steaks, a bag of frozen chicken legs, 2 1 lb chubs of 80/20 ground beef, 1 pound of spaghetti, frozen chicken nuggets or patties, can of spag sauce, pound or two of rice, beans, frozen corn, carrots, and green beans, dozen eggs, quart of shelf stable milk, and one dessert item like a pie, cake mix, brownie mix, etc. seriously for the $$ I could go to Aldi, pick what we like and get more for the $$.

The quality seems to vary greatly depending on where you live. I ordered once near us and it was actually better than I expected. But I have not done it since. The month I ordered was no processed food- since then they seem to have moved to at least one "macaroni beef" kind of meal in the group which we wouldn't eat.

I am just now thinking how I am going to make dinner out of nothing. I want to wait to food shop until tomorrow. (more on sale) So it'll be a pretty creative pantry eating kind of night. We'll see how it goes. Right now I am thinking pork fried rice.

I have ordered from Angel food once, and only once. I wouldn't say it was a "bad" deal, but certainly not a great deal. Only really a "savings" if you were to compare against non-discounted prices at a moderate-to-high priced grocery store.

Overall, you're far better off shopping sales and knowing what are local good deals among available stores.

I got the boxes for 6 months. way too much processed food and some of the meat was so gross there was no way my family would eat. Very poor quality. The pictures and description makes it look to be of good quality but the food is very poor quality.

I got the boxes for a while, but realized I was not getting a value. It was usually low-end meat (stuff that has to go in the crockpot for hours to be tender) and highly processed foods (a deal breaker for me since I cannot eat gluten foods).

For me shopping Aldi, couponing at Publix, shopping at ethnic stores (think mom and pop) and the vegetable markets was a better use of my food money. It may vary for you, depending on what's available near you.

I would suggest contacting your local distribution site and seeing if you can volunteer to help pack and distribute boxes this coming month. That way you can see for yourself first hand what you get for your money.

Alright... that is what I needed to know. Thank you all for your assistance!

My boyfriend's mom and I are going to head out to Food Country as soon as I have my money. I can hopefully stock up on a few things there (such as canned goods). Then I will just try to do better with matching my menu with the sales at my grocery to try and save money. I still have a few more weeks worth of meat up in my freezer too... though no chicken (they only seem to have chicken sales when my freezer is FULL! It's like they know and are messing with me!).

Thanks again!

I order every month. I have not really noticed terrible quality food. Also, they pack lots more vegetables than they did a couple of years ago. It works well for our family and saves lots of grocery money.
