We are an Android family but ds really wants an iphone. What are the pros and cons between android and iphone and with the iphone do you have to pay for all the apps, games, songs and so forth

Thinking about upgrading his for Christmas

Thanks

There are free apps and paid apps, just like for Android. Most music you have to pay for. He would lose any paid apps he has for his android, but you could move the music.

The biggest bonus to an iPhone is the fact that Apple is very strict on what apps make it to the App Store, so you are less likely to download something that will crash your phone or give you a virus.

The last line is why I stick with IPhones.

DS and DD have iPhones. DS has had them since they started and is a strong belieiver, however, he suggests I stay with Android since it suits my needs more than an iPhone would. I would like an iPhone so I can face time with him and with the DD's little ones on ocassion but I have an iPod that will also do that.

DS likes the iPhone better because it doesn't get viruses, updates often, and everyting is internal and easy to back up on the computer. All your Apple devices can be linked together. He now has the 6+ and does not recommend it for anyone with children (a special note to my DD, lol) or who has ever had a phone damaged. He didn't even want me to hold it when he showed it to me because it is so fragile and will be nothing if dropped. DD has the 5 and it must be pretty resilient since she has the three babies and it still works. Her MIL was not so lucky. She dropped hers in a cup of water, didn't have it backed up on the computer and lost all the babies' pictures. She has been devastated about that.

I love my iphone for all the reasons mentioned by the previous posts. I do not think they're overly fragile. I've dropped mine several times--twice on pavement--and it's fine. I do not keep a special case on it, just the standard hard plastic.

I would say the 6 Plus is very fragile. I had the 3gs, the 4, and the 5 over the past few years and have never broken one of them; I broke the glass on the 6 plus the first time I dropped it (I fell and the phone dropped out of my hand). Thank goodness for Apple Care!

It just depends on what system you prefer. If you like to really customize your phone, an Android phone is for you. If you want something very easy to use with many more apps available, go with an iPhone.

That is the reason as well that I have stuck with Apple. I started with a Blackberry then moved onto Android then iPhone. With Android I did not download very many apps for that reason.

Also a lot of people love Android because they state it is more "open source" so you could do more to your phone. Which is true. However, if you don't have programming knowledge that is irrelevant.

iPhones are very easy to use and has more apps available to them. Also as someone else said, they are less prone to viruses. I have been using them since inception and can't imagine moving to another product. I know several people that have had iphones and then switched Android and went back to iphones as soon as they could.

My iPhone 6 is ordered so I can't speak to the fragility of that but my husband has his and has dropped it a few times and it is fine. I currently have a 5s and it has been dropped countless times on pavement and has been completely fine and I don't have a super strong case on it either.

i recently did the switch myself from a droid to iphone. i liked the droid as i had amazon music and a kindle library, but there is an amazon music app for the iphone anyway and i only read the books on my kindle.

i went with a 5S because i liked the size, shape, and wanted more of the apple features. for ex. i can now facetime with my boyfriend instead of just calling which is fun. also my droid started to freeze iphone users have not reported that. i know it is more fragile, so i bought a strong case and a sturdy glass cover, as my boyfriend said its in pretty armor :rotfl2:

i am still trying to learn the features, but overall found it was easier to learn to work the settings and features than when i got a droid. i also have itunes which i am going to hook up as my old ipod won't sync, so for me it was a god price option as it was cheaper than a droid and ipod.

Thank you all for your input. Will he have to get a new phone number or can he keep his current number?

Keep number. You (he) owns that number. Thanks to a law that was passed several years ago now.

Is that typically android lovers love their phones, and iPhone lovers love theirs.

I had an android for a few months & hated it (it was my first smart phone). We have a PC at home but Mac for work & I much prefer iOS. Got my iphone & LOVE it.

Regarding apps--roughly 70% of android apps are free & 70% of iOS apps are not (heard that stat once some time ago--that could be different now). I find PLENTY of free apps, so not a lot of experience with it.

There is a free iPhone Kindle app as well

Really a Coke versus Pepsi situation.

My son has both for work. His summary was the iPhone was better for apps, the Android better for phone calls. When it came time for him to upgrade his personal phone, he went Android because of the lower price.

I'm kind of anti-Apple because I just don't like monopolies on principle, but there are two specific advantages to most Android phones that have nothing to do with the OS: removable batteries and the ability to insert an SD card.

For me, it is SO much easier just having a spare charged battery for my phone that I can switch in under a minute, and also being able to put large files on cards so that they can be switched back and forth between devices. (Yes, you can store them in the cloud, but moving things up and down that way sucks bandwidth a lot more than I would like.) Also, in case of a water landing, you are a lot more likely to be able to save the phone (AND the content) if you've been able to separately dry out the battery.

for what it's worth, Consumer Reports rates the Samsung Galaxy as the #1 smartphone for all 4 major carriers. The iPhone is rated as no better than 4th or 5th for each carrier. This was last January's issue, I don't think I have seen any new ratings

But jd power has said iPhones have the highest customer satisfaction for smartphones every year since they were introduced (in 2007). I agree with the Pepsi/coke analogy. I like Pepsi and iPhones:)

very true. at my office 10 of us eat lunch together and there are 8 iPhones and 2 Samsung Galaxys.
