I still can't believe this one, I read that Andrew Lloyd Webber is doing a remake of The Sound of Music film and he is doing a reality show to cast Maria! I can't believe some of his talent should do a reality show (like we need another one!) First of all I dont think a remake needs to be done of Sound of Music, but remakes are rampant now. It seems that Scarlett Johanson turned down the role of Maria so Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to cast it on tv on this show.

Its a musical on stage and not a Film that they are making.

Firstly.. i think its a fabulous idea. Its prime time television, where they are holding open auditions for the role of Maria.

Professionals and non professionals can apply for the job.

The west end is absolutely empty at the moment.. with theatres really struggling to fill seats. This way, it will go out to millions of people who will become involved in the selection process and see excerpts from the show. All this hopefully will inspire the public to go out and buy tickets.

We have had two shows recently doing something similar.. one being Musicality where they cast Chicago for one night only with amateurs and another called Operatunity.. where they cast two opera singers for one night only..
both shows were huge successes and not only did the shows sell out, many of these people have gone onto bigger and better careers plus there was a lot of money made from the spin off marketing opportunities, (such as cds/dvds etc!)

So, far from being a bad idea.. its a FANTASTIC idea.
We want the west end BUZZING again.. and hopefully this will help!

Thank goodness its a musical on stage and not film. I could never see anyone even trying to fill Julie Andrews shoes as Maria. Broadway here in NYC is doing ok now as its the holiday season, but in January and February some shows might not make it as its a really slow time here for theater. There are alot of incentives out there right now (just got a postcard in the mail for Phantom orchestra seats for $50 instead of $100) We always go to kids night on Broadway in February(where you get a childs ticket for free) going to Sweeny Todd the first night and Beauty and the Beast the second night. We love theater here in our family, would one day love to come to the West end to see a show.
