Russell Yates says he's ready for new family
Ex-wife jailed for drowning their five children

DALLAS - The ex-husband of a woman sentenced to life in prison for drowning their five children said he is ready to move on with his life and might like to start another family.

Russell Yates told The Dallas Morning News in Thursday’s editions that he still cares for ex-wife Andrea Yates. But he finalized his divorce last month, three years after she was sentenced.

“We still care about each other... (but) I couldn’t live that way,” said Yates, 40.

Andrea Yates, 40, claimed she was insane at the time she drowned the couple’s children. She was sentenced to life in prison for three of the deaths, but the convictions were overturned in January by an appeals court panel. Prosecutors have asked the full court to reconsider.

Russell Yates said he’s dating, though he declined to give details. He said he might eventually remarry and have more children.

“I have the freedom now,” he said. “I’d like to do that someday and possibly have a family again... But I’m not 20. I’m 40. So I have to reassess where I’m at, what I have to offer.”

Too bad the 5 Yates children did not get the chance to have a new life . . . :guilty:

Wow, hopefully, the woman who chooses to marry him will not be as "fragile" as Andrea was. Hopefully she will be able to tell him where to go if he insists she just keep making babies and staying home with them 24/7, with no break what-so-ever.

ETA: I too also think he should of been held criminally responsible for his part in this tragedy. :sad2:

The man makes my skin crawl. I've always believed he was a large part of what went wrong and resulted in 5 children being dead.

Your right Deb, too bad they don't have a chance.

He'll probably seek out another complacent, mentally troubled woman so he can take advantage or her.
But on the off chance that he truly was doing the best he could with a very difficult situation it would be normal to want to move on. I would hope he spent the past three years with a good therapist himself.

Something tells me he would have no interest in a woman strong enough to have her own opinion.

::yes:: I AGREE! He should not have anymore children!! Actually, I think he would kill a wife that had any ability to stand up to him at all!!

Really? That is frightening.

Couldn't have said it better myself!
I find him repulsive.

Yes, I really think that. I think he has an outwardly passive-aggressive routine down pat but I think he is capable of being pretty dangerous, himself.

Morally, legally, and practically we cannot say who can and cannot have children. However, since Andrea Yates grew up down the street from my wife, I have a unique perspective on this one. When she had her first and my Mother in Law who still lives in the same neighborhood told my wife that she had had her first child, my wife said " thats one women that should never have any kids!" It was obvious to my wife from knowing the lady twenty five years ago that she was not all there.

It also reminds me of a movie and I can't remember the name of it. It had Steve Martin, Mary Steinbergeon as his wife, Diane Weiss, Jason Robarbs, and the guy who played Mozart in Amedeous. Keenau Reeves was dating the single mothers daughter and in one scene he's talking about how abusive his father was and how he used to wake him uo by throwing lite matches on him. He cocludes the scene by saying " you need a licsense to get married, to drive, hell you even need one to own a dog, but any ******* can be a Father"

What an ***!

Deb - you are dead right in the fact that those poor, innocent children do not get a second chance at life - birthday parties, school plays, proms, learning to drive, dance recitals and baseball and football mages. No second chance for graduating HS, going to college, getting married or having children themselves. :guilty:

*shudder*

I think that man needs to have his willy removed.

I have a full set I'm willing to donate :)

Seriously, after what we know, what woman in her right mind would hook up with him?!

That would be one of my absolute fave movies, "Parenthood".

As for Yates -- I think what bothers me is -- why the press? The divorce was final last month -- why comment at all on where he's going, what he "wants" from life? Out of respect for the ex-wife he claims to "still care for" and their deceased children, I think the appropriate, sensitive response would have been:

Because there didn't need to be one. Filling in the world on his desire to move on, possible procreate again -- what did he expect the world to do, say, "Aw shucks, you go guy, git yerself another woman and live the good life your exwife and 5 kids can't!" Yeah -- RIGHT -- and I have swampland in Florida you can build that dream house on, Rusty.

Perhaps the ones that Scott Peterson had to decline.

I remember watching Larry King a while back. He had Russell Yates and David Smith on together. (I think maybe there was another woman who killed her kids in the news).

I remember thinking, WHY is David Smith sitting there with that guy? There is NO comparision to the two cases. IMO.
