and we're back. [Walt, Wizards, and....Woolungasaurus?]

I saw him on The View once and he is such a nice well spoken man. I find that really hot too.

My friend that I got tattooed with has moved on to get others, including one of her daughters baby foot print. Her daughter is 16 like my oldest.

Well, you gotta know that I'm jealous that you can do a trip with your mom! Keep on thinking about inviting myself along. I figure since YOU are nice and sweet and don't think I'm obnoxious, then your mom must be awesome too, and maybe she would like to adopt me. :)

Well Molly, I hate to say this because I know it sounds really bad, but I am nervous as all get up about bringing my Mom. She has always been "quirky" to say the least, but as she has aged, she has gotten more so! I hope that she will actually be able to relax and go with the flow and enjoy the time with the kids. I think she will, and if she does, we will have a wonderful time. If not, then I will take a deep breath and be tolerant, and still we will have a wonderful time. I have to be careful not to talk politics, and not to really have opinions as she tends to be very argumentive for the sake of arguing, really. Drives me batty I tell ya! I wouldn't mind so much if I thought it was because she really believed in something, vs. just enjoying stiring things up somehow. But, I am really trying to focus on enjoying my time with her, because I know she won't be around forever, and her sister has early onset Alzheimers(sp?) and you just never know what is coming down the road, so I am just seizing the moment. I would truly share my Mom with you in a heartbeat, but I'm not sure it would be that good for you:) You know, there are those kids that only a Mother could love? Well, there are also those Mother's that only a kid could love...

The trouble is that nearly everything in on my must do list. :scared:

I have that same problem!

If you've never had a passport, then you all are first time applicants, and must apply in person. We went to the post office for E, since kids always have to be done in person (after making sure which POs do the passport stuff).

Unless you're renewing you are charged the passport fee AND an administrative fee.

For people 16 and over, right now, before the 13th, for the passport book, it is $75 and $25.

For kids under 16, it's $60 and $25.

On the 13th, it changes.

Adults (aka 16 and over) = $110 and $25

Under 16: $80 and $25

I was approaching two deadlines. You have 15 years from the issuance of your passport to renew. That 15 years is up on the 25th of July. The discount on renewing is that you do it by mail, and aren't charged that administrative fee. And then if we'd done it after the 13th, it would have gone up more b/c of the fee change.

If you can get everyone's birth certificates, your IDs, get the forms filled out AND manage for you and hubby to take an hour or two off work either today or Monday so you can get in and get the kid's applications in, it might be worth it (if you can swing it, of course). I know that I REALLY miss Canada! It's *right there*, and of course it's closer for you! But I also want the option of the world, which is why I didn't just do the more limited passport card. Since we haven't been able to use Robert's ff miles on this Disney trip (yet), they might just sit there, waiting to be used by me and E to follow him some place fun! :)

There is also the passport CARD, depending on your travel plans:

Thanks for that great info. That is a big jump, but I just don't think I could manage to get that all organized and done on time. Plus Canada is the only possible travel in my life for a while yet. Plus my oldest is 14, so seems like unless we are going somewhere, no point in getting him one now. Nathan and I have enhanced driver's licenses, and I am going to get Andrew one too. I have asked Bill to get one, but he has not gotten that done yet...sigh! I may have to just go to Canada without him once or twice before he gets motivated, unless Boeing sends him out of the country and hooks him up with a passport. He keeps telling me he is going and I keep saying good, go and earn some miles for us...:rotfl:...and then he doesn't go anywhere!!

Thank you.

I never thought about it and I cannot believe that I missed that reference. I love that movie. I need to find that P&P.

Me too! I need to slow down and watch more movies. I did make it to Wild Waves on Friday night with Nathan and then went river floating today though! But darn my house is still a mess and tomorrow it is Monday and off to work and appointments etc I will go...

I wouldn't mind so much if I thought it was because she really believed in something, vs. just enjoying stiring things up somehow.

OMG that's my dad, too. He lives to be the "devil's advocate".

Oh yeah, I forgot about the enhanced driver's licenses. Well since you have those, and Canada is "it" for you right now, then that works! And I totally did NOT know you could get an enhanced ID for the non-drivers until you mentioned Nathan. Just went ot check, if only I'd known! Could have done that AGES ago! Augh!

Off Robert goes, tomorrow morn, on another trip! Just a quickie this time, though. We got to visit his new building today. Amazon has built their own buildings now, well, some of the buildings are done. And on Monday his group got to move on over! Very exciting for the company. :goodvibes He had some things that couldn't be trusted to the moving company, so I'd picked them up and today brought them back, and we got to sit and have a coffee off the public space of his building (we weren't allowed to his actual offices today).

And here's what I found out. ONE, I freakin' miss working at amazon. TWO, I want to be part of something bigger than me, so I've got to work double-time at getting E's learning space set up and get his curriculum, so that helping the little dude learn can be just that part of something bigger for me! And THREE, holy junk, drip coffee's caffeine levels are through the roof! We left the offices and went over to Fremont's PCC (a local fancy co-op that I love but am not a member of), which took maybe 20 minutes including parking, and by the time I parked I was shaking from the caffeine! And my coffee wasn't even that large. Crazy.

I :lovestruc Fremont. We have friends that just found a rental house up there for just about what we're paying on this condo. If we lived there, Robert could buy a bike and get to work that way. (knock wood here that all remains the same OR better in a good easy no company changes or work changes unless he initiates them way) And I'd have a PCC.

But but but...in around 2ish years we're going to have a McMenamins B&B not a minute's walk away from here! And that would be cool. But Fremont has one of their pubs. And it's right near the zoo in Seattle.

Obviously this thought is in its infancy. Haven't even mentioned it to Roberto.

So speaking of Jane Austen, has anyone read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

My daughter read Pride And Prejudice And Zombies. She really enjoyed it. My family tends to be Zombie loving fools, especially Scotty.

:) Do you guys have those Zombie parade/marches? There's one in Seattle each year; my college friend always goes to it (with her grown and nearly grown daughters!).

I'm in the trip planning doldrums!

Well Freemont is closer to Mukilteo! And we love the Zoo:) Just sayin....

Anyhoo...I have sort of a bad Jane Austen Mojo going on. See, I chose her as my subject for my English 101 research paper. Yes, it was way more than my very immature brain was up to. I still shudder at the thought. But I keep thinking I will grow up enough to revisit as I think I would enjoy it now. We'll see!

There isn't one but I know that they would love it. I am not the zombie fan, I am not sure why.

Oh I understand that one. There have been authors that I have put aside as being not mature enough to read. There are a few I will never read for that reason. If I am not mature enough yet it will never happen.

Aughhhhh, I've been tired all day (all this working out and some fractured sleep), but I have to stay up so we can go get Robert. And his flights were both delayed today, so he's getting in even later than he would have been. Harumph. All I wanna do is go to sleeeeeeeeep.

I've been amazed at how different the "classics" are reading them as an adult vs a 15 year old. Or even a 20 y.o. in college. I finally read Emma, and the subtle stuff in there is so, um, subtle, and I never would have gotten the full understanding of the story before now.

Tiredddddd.

One book I reread as an adult, a classic but not on the same level classic was Anne Of Green Gables. I enjoyed them(meaning the whole series)as a kid, but I loved them as an adult.

I really love to read. I have always read about a book a day. My whole life, until I had kids...I can't for the life of me find time to read now. I start books, but seldom get them finished. Usually my reading occurs on our camping trips and I will consume a book or two over two days. I love it!

I know all about that. When the kids were littler there were things I only got to do when we were camping so I would always bring extra stuff, like a bunch of books and my embroidery. Now that they are teenagers I find that I read and embroider more. I still bring a bunch of books.:goodvibes

Those baskets look really cute. They have some my boys would like.

Sorry about the planning doldrums. I can't drum up any enthusiasm for a DLR trip in Nov. Maybe I'll have to re-think the timing and go next year. Our DS 14 is disney-ed out right now and says if we go any time soon he just wants to stay home. :scared1: Maybe we've been too often in the last 4 years. :confused3

It seems like there is a rush, rush mentality to plan for WDW and then when you're done with ADR's and all of your hotel choices and stuff there's nothing to do??? Hurry up and wait is what my Dad would call it.

That seems to be what has happened! Ugh.

It's OK, but I feel like a loser coming here and not talking about the trip, ya know?

the reality is...I've got a lot going on with organizing my universe, doing bunches of reading with DS, preparing house and brains and pocketbooks for 1st grade curriculum in September, etc. We're doing a lot of reading, or trying to, this summer because I didn't do as much last year as I'd wanted. Except for the religious part, I have been really drawn to this one curriculum that uses a whole lotta books, and they are open about exactly what books they read. After a lot of thinking, I realized I can't just buy their stuff and then dump a bunch of books (and it would cost MORE to buy things piecemeal, b/c they have a good discount on the whole thing) and ignore a lot of their stuff...so we went a different direction. But I do like a lot of the book choices, so we're checking them out of the library and reading them, marking them off a list when done. :) It's kinda fun.

Then again, I like lists. ;)

Can I recommend books that Loren loved? He really loved the Biscuit books when he was E's age. They are simple without being too simple for him to read.

That seems to be what has happened! Ugh.

What curriculum did you decide to go with? I have a good friend whose daughter reads a TON of classics - they homeschool and spend a huge amount of time at the library. It really works for them. I don't know what her specific curriculum is - but she really likes it.

It is such a big decision to decide what teaching aids to use. When I homeschooled my oldest DS we used Saxon math and then another reading/phonics/English curriculum that I didn't like very well - I can't even remember the name, now - that's how much I didn't like it. :confused3 I wasn't a very organized or particularly good home school mom - not organized enough, I guess.

Have you checked out Core Knowledge? It is the curriculum that they use at my kid's charter school. I love that it combines History, English, Folk/American Music and Science so that kids understand the particular time line that they are studying. For instance, when DS 8 was studying about racial freedom they learned about Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, talked about slaves and learned the music that slaves sang, did artwork related to the subject, talked about racial persecution and even studied some of the foods that were popular then. It was a really cool unit and the teacher covered it well. His teacher was also willing to change around a unit on China when she found out that DH was willing to come in and talk to the kids about Chinese New Year and the symbolism of it.

I don't know if Core Knowledge has a home school version - but it might be worth checking out.

We sometimes feel like we wear out our library cards in the summer - that and get water logged since we have one of those above ground pools in our back yard. We sort of hunker down and read, swim and play all summer. :thumbsup2
