Today started out very badly. Iwasn't feeling good to being with (i'm just getting over a cold) and then my boss called me into his office to "talk" with me. I use the term talking loosly here, yelling at me would be more appropriate. Turns out that last night one of our programmers was having difficulty using a tool that I designed and my team developed. He didn't didn't think he could get it to work in time to meet a very important deadline. He told my boss that the tool "does not work and never has worked".
My boss took the programmer at his word and spent half an hour yelling at me about testing and quality control. then he wanted to know why we ever build such a #$%! tool in first place?!!! I spent the entire 1/2 hour confused because I knew the tool worked and I was non too happy about the whole thing. I took a stand and told him he was wrong, which didn't make him any happier either. I was getting angry enough to quit.
Well, it turns out that after lunch, the programmer e-mailed my boss and said everything was fine. The tool worked fine and the project was finished. The programmer had messed up and tried to use the tool imporperly. Once he found his mistake, everything worked great. Just a few minutes ago, my boss came into my office and appologized.
My boss doesn't really understand what I do all that well (My group was only recently moved into his division), and up until now he just assumed that any complaints we received about our tools had to my fault. Well, today all that changed. From now on he has promised to research issues with me first before drawing conclusions.
In other words, what started out as something infuriating for me actually ended up making my life better! Hey, you cant ask for more than that! Just goes to show you never know what God is gonna do with the hand you've been dealt at the start of the day.
