Although the virus can be airborne, you would most likely have to be right near someone actively vomiting, or be cleaning substantial amounts of contaminated material that aerosolizes and spatters to be infected with Norwalk via airborne contamination. Unless someone you are staying with and taking care of has Norwalk, you are most likely only going to get it by touching something contaminated and putting your fingers in your mouth, or by eating food that was contaminated by someone not washing effectively and touching it before you got to it. Besides Purell, Avon makes some very nicely scented forms of "waterless" soap. Using the hand sanitizers after touching the things everyone touches is of course a great idea. But, don't forget, use the sanatizer AFTER going through the buffet line but BEFORE touching your food or utensils. When you touch the serving items, you may as well have shaken hands with the hundreds of others ahead of you in line. Washing your hands before going into the dining room isn't enough in the case of the buffets.

Okay everyone on teh 12/6 cruise just to let you know we have at least 3 nurses sailing! We cover ER/Pediatrics/Cardiac -

Should be a great time, I hope not to work at all while I am onboard but if someone should need me, I am in cabin 5513 and charge $120 consult fee  OR a drink with an umbrella will do just fine for payment :teeth:

Just to let you know...just returned from our Wonder trip from the weekend. I washed my hands constantly- opened doors with my forearm, carried and used Purell, and tried to keep my hands from my face. I've got the flu today and my kids and husband (who did very little of the above) feel great. It's luck of the draw.

The issue is that a cruise ship has to report it before entering port if more than 2% of passengers/crew are "sick" or have been ill for any part of the cruise. They don't all have to have the same illness. Then the media picks it up, and we have the horror stories.

In contrast, in this state, the local schools do not have to report it to the health department unless 10% of students/staff are out on any given day. Hmmmmmm 10% on one day vs. 2% over 7 days.....not exactly the same standards.

The stateroom attendants on the Magic change gloves and cloths between each room cleaning. The general feeling is that most comtamination comes from public areas, and expecially elevator buttons. Frequent hand washing/hand sanitizers are your best protection, expecially before meals.

Someone on this board made a suggestion that I tried to follow during our last cruise. They said that when you need to use the restroom, try to go back to the one in your stateroom and not use the public ones.

I thought that sounded like a good idea and just thought I would pass it along.

What an excellent suggestion- I wish I would have used it. I do remember a lot of people physically ill in the public bathrooms, but I assumed it was the tremendous wave action that evening.
