So, my poor Jakey-Boy...he is such a kind and gentle dog. Last Tues. even. I had fed him and Spencer. I called Jake to his bowl, and he took the long way to it. (this is odd)
When he got close to me, I noticed he was hanging his head, and there was blood in his outer layer of fur. For those of you that don't know Keeshonds, they have like 3 layers of fur. The layer closest to their body is a real thick, wooly type fur...it is kind of difficult to see skin thru this stuff.
So, the blood is a little bit on the outer fur, the longer fur-black hair. So, I am digging, and he is kinda looking at me like...ooch! So, I take him into the kitchen, and start cutting the hair away. Well, I can't cut it close enough to the skin, but I see like 4 blood spots in the thick undercoat. I take some water on a washcloth and start blotting. The blood isn't running, and he scampers over to eat his dinner. We decide to skip animal emergency and take him to the regular vet in the morning.
Get to the vet, they are closed on Wed.'s. So...we watch it, and it is scabbed up, and he is feeling fine.
Friday nite...oh my gosh....the smell!! He was infected, so Sat. am I call our vet, and they can't see him, so I get him into another one, after waiting 2 hours, and 1 hour in exam room, they come in and shave his neck. There is a 2 inch cut, open on the left side of his neck, and 3 puncture marks on the right side. The vet feels he got caught on something, because the 3 puncture marks are not from a bite.
They keep him, to stitch him up, and we picked him up Monday nite. He is all bandaged, and tomorrow the drain comes out.
He is doing great, he has always been such a good dog. Never hurt anyone, just a real "lover"...just a little humiliated...
We are leaving for Disney on Thursday, and we are having one of our daughter's friends stay here with the animals...I feel better knowing someone will be here to keep an eye on him.
