Hey folks, we are planning a trip for 2013. THe last time our family of 5 went was in 2006. I created a thread back then (it can be searched, for it and all its nonsense off topic discusion). Below i have added the letter i sent to disney back in 2006 which resulted in a call from some Top Brass at the parks.

Can someone read below and tell me if i should expect the same in 2013?
I am hoping they have made BIG STRIDES since then....

Here is what i wrote in 2006....

Greetings,

My family and I are Disney junkies. We go from Memphis to Orlando about every 2 to 3 years. I guess you could say we are a typical Disney vacationing family. We have many many other choices but we always choose Disney.

We JUST got back from our trip this year (October 6th thru 14th) and was our 1st time staying off property. There are many pluses and minuses for both sides, but if we were to do it all over, we'd stay on property. The hassle of driving is too much.

Let me get to the point of my letter.

What has happened to the Disney Parks? The quality seems to be rapidly slipping away from you guys. I am SO VERY PRO DISNEY and would never say an ill word about the parks, but as we were there, we mentioned many times how things seem to be changing for the worse. Last time we went, back in 2001 we had a couple of rude cast member experiences. But this time trouble seems to have manifested its self all over every aspect of the park. I could not believe what we were experiencing.

Let me go down a quick list of things we all noticed.

1. The monorail system smells like a petting zoo. It smells like the abandon side streets here in Memphis on beale street that the bums use as bathrooms. Walt would not be happy about this at all. We noticed this last time too.

2. A bus driver driving a Disney Resort bus mounted a curb and almost ran over my kids. No kidding! This happened at Downtown Disney. Its not like we snuck up on this bus, we were in plain sight and the driver just kept coming. I sat there stunned at what I saw.

3. The audio tracks on Haunted mansion kept coming in and out, like bad cell reception. This is NOT acceptable. The same thing happened on Test track. It would start, and stop in the middle of a word.....a minute would go by and it would resume. It would make no sense to a 1st time visitor. We know these rides well and my kids even asked what was wrong. Why would Disney allow this to be a normal thing?

4. The safari drivers at Animal kingdom sounded like they dreaded the next word they had in their script. This was my sisters families 1st time at Disney. It took some convincing to get her to come down, and she mentioned that it sounded dull, monotone and tired. One of the drivers passed us in the queue and she looked madder than hell! Happiest place on earth?

5. The ride Haunted mansion and Spaceship Earth stopped at least 5 times in the middle of the ride. And on Spaceship earth we had a Cast Member who was seating us get verbally forceful with my wife. Not nice at all.

6. We LOVE dining at Si-Fi, its a must do for each of our Disney trips. We do it EVERY time we come. This time the food was horrible, the waiter helping us looked 'put out' that we were there, service was really bad, the cast members always have interacted with the funny 'b' movies on the screen, which adds to the si-fi experience...not a sound. AND we did not get Frisbee's with our 2 kids meals. Now I could swear the prices did not go down on my meals, but what I got was sub par service, and a far less of a Disney experience. I sat astounded.

7. This one is a minor one, but we went to the SLUSHY store over by Pirates of the Caribbean, and they have 4 things on the menu...2 of which are slushi's....guess what was broken? Its like going to a seafood restaurant and them telling you they have no seafood. If this were a 7-11...its no big deal, but this is DISNEY, who ONCE prided themselves in "legendary customer service"...I know cuz I took the course!

What I witnessed this time was heartbreaking. The prices are sky high, but the level of service has truly fallen. I always wondered how Universal Studios could compete with Disney. I felt they could never RAISE the bar high enough...what is sad is they don't have to...Disney is lowering the bar so low that its easy for them to catch up.

I feel all patriotic in side when I see Mickey mouse. Its like a marine seeing an American flag. This time we were soooo disillusioned that we are probably going to just do a Skanky Six-Flags vacation next time. It appears that who ever is overseeing the parks has lost Walt's vision. It kills me to say that, but what we experienced this past week is proof.

We did have some good experiences, it was not all bad, but the bad far far overshadowed the good.

I'd love to talk to anyone who cares about this. I've got all my receipts if you guys need help tracking down the facts.

I hope this does not fall on deaf ears.

I know you're asking about WDW, but I just returned from DLR and as we were leaving I felt like writing a letter as well with similar sentiments. I LOVE Disney still and some cast members were phenomenal, but still others were unbelievably rude. Then the price hikes, obvious need for refurbs, etc. it all just made me think "what happened to Disney?".

I kept thinking that they must be on a budget and that some CMs need more training. I know that sounds really negative, but it's the truth. Although like I said I still love Disney and there are a lot of things I was impressed with. CMs at the hotel (Paradise Pier) were outstanding and so was our waitress at Wine Country. I've been going regularly for 10 years and I still wish I could live there. I'm really hoping that they're just going through changes or a hiccup and will be back to being magical soon.

I'm a "try it again" person and like to think next time will be better.

I hope not a lot of people feel this way! I am sure looking forward to the magic in November. I have always felt that every CM and every park was top notch, keeping in mind that minor glitches can happen. I hope I am not disappointed this year. Disney is my happy place.

The monorail can be smelly when it's super hot and there are a lot of sweaty people in and out :rotfl: That can't totally be helped.

The Haunted Mansion's sound is great!

The last few times I've been on Safari the drivers you could tell were on a script but were enjoying themselves and added a few added things, even started a few conversations in between mandatory dialogue.

It's true they still have a good amount of not so quality things, but there is also some wonderful and creative merchandise that is well worth it. With all the expansions and changes I think they might up their game very soon because they'll have the money to do so. They just invested in a wholllllleeee lot! Between buying Marvel and all the construction?! They'll be back on their feet soon.

Only in 2007 did I come across a grumpy CM and it was minor. Usually they're all quite lovely and having a good time, even at the end of a long day when you can tell they're getting really tired (yawning and eye rubbing) but still smiling and in good spirits. 'Work mode' :surfweb:

Overall I still love Disney but yes it does have little kinks.

Hey Totaldreamer,

What exactly is DLR?

Everyone, Please dont get me wrong about my original post. When i am cut..i bleed WDW. When i see a disney movie, i stand at attention and salute. Heck, we HONEYMOONED at WDW (and we could have gone anywhere).

Years ago i went thru the Disney "Legendary Customer Service" Training class.
So i have been taught by the best. BUT when i see my Customer Service Guru letting me down, its really hard to accept.

I totally can understand that ALL the cast members are not gonna be on their A game ALL of the time. But when i was seeing 'red flags' at several places that i had been to many times before it took me by suprise. When my son was almost hit by a CM's food cart and no apology just kept going...and days later about having him taken out by a bus....things started adding up.

I really am not about bashing disney at all, but that whole week we were there in 2006 so many things happened it appeared that something was up...and after a few calls i discovered there was a new park manager, well, it started to make sense. Dumbing Down food service, hiring cheaper labor, rides stinking to high heaven......someone is not keeping an eye on Walt's Jewel! I am hoping this was just growing pains and its all behind them now.

Was hoping to hear from folks who have been to WDW recently and can comment on what they are seeing.

1. The monorail smells funny. it pretty much always has, pretty sure it always will. That isn't going to change. If you are going to MK from the ticket center try using the ferry, or from one of the deluxe resorts use the boat service they have. otherwise, you will have to deal with the smell

2. bus drivers-i have witness some scary bus driving by disney busses and busses near me. I understand what you are saying, when you didn't just appear near the bus, but the bus is big and the driver is manuevering a large vehicle in sometimes small spots. I suggest staying far back from the lines when busses are pulling around.

3. I havent had any trouble with the audio on the rides and i have been in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012, so that may have been a glitch? it seems to be fixed

4. The safari got rid of the big red/poachers story line. I havent been on it in almost a year and this removal just started, so i cant comment on what happens now. i have heard both good and bad, so only personal experience can determine that.

5. both those rides are the omnimovers. They occasionally have to stop if they are loading a handicapped person or if someone is just having difficulty getting on/off. Unfortunately a cast member yelling at your family member probably shouldn't have happened. I can't guarantee that the enxt time you ride you wont be stuck waiting somewhere through the ride, but im hopeful that your interaction will be better with the cast member

6. i can't say much, i didnt kno the kids were supposed to get frisbees, however, i cant say im suprised that they took that away. disney has gotten off giving away freebies for the most part. Last i heard, they even just have plain napkins without any disney logos on it (to me it doesnt matter im just pointing out something so cheap they are doing to cut costs)

7. while i understand your dissapointment at the slushi machines being down, thats unfortunately something that happens anywhere. its always just more noticible in disney.

When you go back, you are bound to run into a cast member not having the best day. Remember, even though you are on vacation- this is their job. They may love working at disney, but who knows, maybe they have a headache, or they got called into work last minute and had to cancel plans, or a family member was supposed to come visit and it got cancelled and now the cast member is bummed out. Obviously DIsney prides itself on wonderful customer service and cleanliness and fun, but this is the real world and problems will come up. Have i seen a change over the years? absolutely, but i still come home with great stories and memories because i just let go of the not so stellar moments and focus on what was fun.
Im sure if you take your next trip and try to focus on the good and let the poor roll off your shoulders it will be wonderful for you
