DH and I are both in our early forties. We visit Disney World every year. We have stayed in nearly every type of accommodation offered – value, moderate, deluxe, and home-away-from home. We are not resort “snobs” and have always enjoyed our stays regardless. We don’t complain. We are very easy going people. We know that we are basically using the room just to sleep, as we are on the go most of the time.

Our reservations for this trip were at Pop Century. Reasons for this choice: our budget called for a value this time; this was the least expensive way to take advantage of the free Disney Dining plan that was being offered at the time; I had heard a lot of good things about Pop Century and thought we should try it since we had stayed at the All Stars previously.

We will not be returning to Pop Century.

Reason number one:

I have never, anywhere, in ANY hotel (Disney or otherwise), no matter how inexpensive or expensive, stayed anywhere where the walls were as thin as at Pop Century. We could literally hear everything that happened in the rooms on either side of us. We knew that “Isabelle” in room 3168 didn’t like to brush her teeth and had to be scolded/yelled at every night and morning to do so. We learned that "Nathan" in room 3166 threw a screaming fit every night before bed and every morning when they were getting ready. We could hear details of conversations being held at normal volume in the rooms next to us. We heard every toilet flush made in each room on either side of us. We heard every shower. If we happened to be in our restroom at the time, we even heard details from our neighbors’ (above, behind, and beside) restroom visit (if you know what I mean).

Reason number two:

When we checked into the room at around 1:30 on our arrival day – it was like an oven. I had printed some directions that someone had provided on the Pop Century FAQ thread to override the motion detector/thermostat in the rooms at POP, but those directions didn’t match the thermostat we had – which actually appeared to be brand new. (Maybe they’re onto us.) The thermostat was “automatic” and could not be adjusted. I then called “engineering” and asked if they could come and check the A/C – as it appeared to be set on 68 but it was far warmer than that.

While we were in the parks, someone apparently visited the room and reset the thermostat to 65 degrees. It was still very warm in the room. The fan would run for a few minutes and would then shut off. I hit the “display” button on the thermostat and it showed the “actual” temp in the room – 78 degrees!

I called engineering again and asked for someone to come check it. The person said that someone would be right there. It was late and we were tired, so, after 30 minutes, when no one had come yet, my husband called them back. The woman who answered this time literally snapped his head off. “This is not a priority sir. Please allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for a response!” He was stunned and told her that the original person said that someone would be there “right away.” All she did was repeat, “Please allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for a response.” Wow. Thanks for that famous Disney customer service.

When the maintenance person did come, he fiddled with the thermostat for awhile, pushing buttons quickly and kind of “hiding” what he was actually doing from view. He said that it had been “programmed wrong” and that it should cool down now and that the fan should stay on – at least on low – all of the time during our stay. I am guessing that he actually did some sort of override, but didn’t want me to see what or how. He set the temperature on 68, saying that was as low as the thermostat would allow them to go. He said that the 65 degrees that appeared on the thermostat when we returned to the room “didn’t mean anything” since it wouldn’t cool below 68 anyway. Wow. Thanks a lot to the maintenance person who must have thought he could trick us into thinking that we were cooler.

During the rest of our stay (with 95 degree weather), the room was cool enough day and night following his visit – so whatever he did worked. (We did not notice any kind of motion sensor or anything that impacted the unit – as I have read here previously.)

The resolution of this was acceptable, although I do not particularly appreciate not having some control over my own A/C in the room, think that this must be an issue that they are aware of, and wonder how many people sit and swelter thinking that they have no choice, etc.

Reason number three:

We love the food court concept. We enjoy grabbing breakfast before we leave the resort and like having the various options available for a quick lunch or dinner.

The food court at Pop is a zoo. I kept reminding myself that we were there at a non-busy time of year. I cannot imagine what it’s like during busy season. It is poorly laid out and seems tiny in comparison with the food courts at other resorts. The seating area is deafening. I’m sure that this has something to do with the warehouse-like design of the exposed metal ceiling and ductwork, but the place just reverberates with noise. You can’t even carry on a conversation. I’m not complaining about kids having fun and being excited – it’s Disney World for goodness sake. The layout is just crazy and there is nothing to absorb the sound. Not a pleasant way to start the day.

We would stay again at the All Stars if that is what the budget allowed, but not at Pop Century. I am not knocking the value resorts as a whole. I understand that there is a need for this type of resort. The theming is cute. The pools were nice. It was great to see that they actually had lifeguards on duty, even late into the evening. If I were a parent, I would appreciate that.

I wrote this review because I have appreciated the information I have received here in the past about the various resorts. However, I have seen others who have provided such honest (negative) information who have been attacked for doing so or have had posters essentially accuse them of lying or making stories up because the OP's post didn't match their own personal experience. I hope that doesn’t happen here – but - if it does that’s okay too. What’s important to me is that people understand what they are getting into.

I plan to do a separate post (on the Restaurants Board) with a review of our use of the Disney Dining plan – which was just AWESOME!

Yikes! I'll be there with my DD in 10 days. Since we'll be only there 4 nights I guess it will have to do. Hopefully everyone will head to the parks while we are still in bed and we get catch up on some zzz's!

Now you've got me kids scared! We get there Oct 2. This is our first time in a value, took it with free dining for cheap trip! :cool1: Oh well, at least we'll be in Disney! :cheer2:

Sorry you had such a bad stay. I really hate to hear that as I will be staying there for the first time coming up in Nov. Most of the reviews I have read have been very positive for POP so, hopefully you just ran into some bad luck. :wave2:

I have friends who stayed at POP last year, and they suggested that we stay at AsMo for our upcoming trip ...they stated the same reasons as you did!

THANK YOU for posting about the noise! We had the SAME experience - and our neighbors were NOT rude they were just talking normally! We woke to their alarm clock each morning - that's how thin they were. And yet people say that those who have issues with the noise are resort snobs, which of course is not true. I'm just a sleep snob, LOL!

We did not have the other issues you did, thankfully, though the food court was a nightmare we ate one meal there and never went back. My complaint has always been the thin walls. I just don't get how others don't hear it????

Sorry you had a rough stay, but appreciate you posting.

edited to change day to stay, LOL!

Got a chuckle out of reson number 1 So sorry your stay wasnt good, ive never stayed at Pop but popped over to check out the foodcourt.

No offense, but I think "reviews" good or bad are all subject to many varying factors. OP states they will never go back to POP...I, on the other hand, will avoid the All-Stars like the plague and will only consider POP as my value selection. That's what I say today...I may have a bad experience at POP on my next trip (I hope not!) and I may change my opinion.

Dodie...sorry you had such a bad experience with the maintenance staff. I'd make a call to Disney and complain.

This always amazes me when someone complains about "thin walls". I have stayed at POP probably 5 times and have never heard anyone in the rooms next to me. The only place where I've had that happen was at Board Walk when we had a door in the room (to an ajoining room). Maybe we've just lucked out and never had neighbors at Pop. I can't say I've ever noticed. It would bother me if it happened!

Just to compare - I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn this past summer and the air stopped working in the room. After trying to repair it (promptly) they offered to move me to another room. They were going to move me into an upgraded room but none was available so they compted me for the first night and discounted my new room at $40.00 off per night for the rest of my stay- just for my inconvenience!
Now that place had excellent customer service!

We'll be back at POP this weekend, but we like it. I just won't expect service like they have at the Hilton that's for sure!

Not that I don't believe the OP, but my cousin works for Disney and did anyone know that the walls are the same at the allstars as they are at Pop? It's true. Nice cheap 2x3 construction with no insulation. People will have problems where ever they stay. One of the worst times we had was at YC, so you never know. All I'm saying is take it with a grain of salt. There are over 2000 rooms at Pop Century so if Disney only gets it right 99% of the time that means there are people in 20 rooms that are not going to be happy customers. Maine :firefight

We stayed at Pop in July. It was our first experience with a Value, so I'm glad to hear that other values are not the same. Our experiences were very similar to the OPs. The noise did not really bother us when sleeping because my DD uses a noise machine at night, set fairly loud, and that blocks most ambient noises at night. (Although our poor neighbors probably got to hear it too!)

We had several occasions to call maintenance about our room and the CMs at the front desk were rude and not at all truthful about the response time we could expect.

And I completely agree that the food court is incredibly loud. I actually liked the court itself, for the food and the layout, etc. But the NOISE! It was really deafening and I *have* a small child! When we stayed there, Pop was at full capacity, but I did not think it seemed that crowded, just loud!

This experience completely turned us off of Pop. Perhaps next time when the opportunity presents, I will stay at an AllStar resort.

There are actually 2880 rooms at pop, nut your point is a good one.

We'll be staying at Pop for the first time in 10 days. With so many complaints about the noise, I think I may throw in some ear plugs for sleeping.

Thanks for the info, Dodie!

Never had a problem with anything the OP said each times we have stayed at POP and we head back in OCT!!! we have stayed at all level resorts too and almost switched to the CBR but decided we wanted pop again..sorry you went through this, but everyone has a different experience..i will be going back many more times!!!

I am sorry you had a bad stay. My stay at Pop was great and I don't recall thinner walls than the other values or a busier/louder food court. That was my experience, and no less "honest" than yours.

I have also heard this quite a bit. That is another reson why I am sticking with the All Stars.
My TA suggested I try POP since it is newer but after my wonderful stays at the All Stars I said No Thanks!

I am 55 years old and travel several times a year. I often stay at 4 star hotels.
So the deluxe resorts do not have anything special for me.
All Star is like being in the heart of the Magic and that is where I want to be.
The buses are wonderful.

Bus rides are quite short from the ALL Stars according to PassPorter.com

All Star Buses-CBR buses---POPbuses--PO buses--- Contemporary
MK 20 min---- 20 min-----25 min------10 min---20 min(mono)
Epcot 10 min-- 15 min-----20 min------10 min---15 min
MGM 10 min----12 min-----15 min------15 min---20min
AK 10 min------20min-------15 min----15 min---20 min
DTD 15 min----20 min------20 min-----15 min---35 min

I have visited WDW more than a dozen times with the 1st time in Oct. 1971. It was brand new. I've stayed at FW, Disney Inn, a few the of Hotels on hotel Blvd., CBR and the towers at the Contemporary. I got to see the MK from my balcony at the Contemporary and I'm happy I got to experience it once. I just prefer the All Star Resorts.
The theaming is pure Disney.
My last 4 visits have been at The All Stars and this fall when we take dd,dsil, and our grandson age 3 we are staying at the All Stars Music. I thought about AKL and even though we can well afford AKL I just wanted Alex to experience the Disney Magic :wizard: at the All Stars on his first visit.
Where else can one find Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse at the pool?
Have a great time at Disney!

I also prefer the All-Stars over Pop, though for different reasons than Dodie.

I agree with Dodie about the Pop food court - the high ceilings make for a great noise chamber that is deafening. If I remember correctly - isn't all of Pop's food court floor tile? That also increases the noise level, though it makes the floors MUCH easier to clean than the carpeted floors at the All-Stars.

I have never had a major noise problem at the All-Stars or Pop. I once had a group of teens in the next room cheering loudly at a sporting event on TV till 11pm, but that was it.

My room at Pop was pretty warm (considering that I stayed there in December), but my room at ASMU in May was so hot I had to buy a $10 fan from Walmart just to get to sleep at night! Of course, that was before I saw someone on the boards post how to override the motion sensor on those thermostadts.

I see the noise issue regarding Pop so often on here that I am starting to wonder if certian rooms have a problem. Not sure how that could be, but I can't understand why some people hear so much and others don't. Maybe it is the 3 kids, my life is a zoo all the time noise tolerance vs the no kids I have peace and quiet as my norm.

We stayed there and never heard more than what you would expect from any hotel room. We split our stay with AKL and we heard a lot more there. Not enough to bother us, I just noticed it because of all the noise reports about PC.

I agree- the food court can be a zoo. But it did depend on time of day, we ate there four or five times. This, I think is to be expected.

If noise is a problem or concern bring a small fan or white noise generater (about $30)- my sister does this all the time because she is very noise sensitive.

We had the same issues regarding the food court at Pop. We were there in late January so the park hours were short so we didn't want to waste park time eating dinner. Us and everybody else at Pop. It was insane in there. The resort was no where near sold out but it was always packed and felt like a dorm cafeteria and sounded like one too. Our room was quiet the first few nights then we got neighbors and it was a different story. They weren't noisy the walls just didn't filter out any noise. I did hear the couple next to us discussing whether or not to refinance their house! I am sure they heard all of our conversations as well. I would still stay there again for a short stay but would not use the food court except at very off hours. We preferred our stay at ASMO and actually found the buses at All Stars better. On the bright side, the resort was spotless including our room and my kids loved the theming and pools. We are staying at All Star Sports in a few weeks and I am packing a fan for noise and cooling purposes! Also, after our stay at Pop (10 nights) we realized we can't do that long at the values. 3 or 4 nights max due to the lack of amenities and crowds and noise issues.

The walls may be the same but my room at the All Stars seems very quite once I shut the door to the outside. Perhaps the difference is in the AC.
Pop has cental AC which is quieter than the AC at All Stars. The upside of the AC at the All Stars is that it makes "white noise" thus I DO NOT hear my neighbors and I have a good nights sleep.
