My wife and I are visiting New York for the first time in October. Can anyone recommend hotel to stay (or good site to book from)? Good location, good standard but still value for money.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Peter

I moved this to the Community Board--- they can probably help you better there.

welcome to NY!

please feel free to PM me for any info.

try this site:

NY City Tourism

my choice for hotel, if price is no consideration, is the Marriot Marquis in Times Square, or the Plaza, or the Waldorf (both on the East Side), but there are many fine, less well known hotels available.

Hi Peter :) We have had several threads on this on the UK Community Board - if you put New York into the search and select the UK Community Board you'll get two pages of threads but here is one that we had there on hotels :-

New York

Our trip to New York was in October 2002 and I hope the weather is as good to you as it was to us!! Got a bit cold on the top of those open top busses, but apart from walking, it was the only way to really appreciate the wonderful Manhattan buildings.

Shirley, thanks for info, will indeed do a search as you suggest. Also helpful to know you visited recently at the same time of year so may come back with some specifics for planning ideas a little nearer the time if that's OK.

Briar Rose, thanks for the link, great site. Noticing you're from Long Island is actually very topical at the moment. Just this morning finished a book Plum Island by Nelson Demille. Fantastic novel and I've been reading about Long island Sound, the North Fork, Gardiners Island, Shelter Island, Orient Pt. But particularly Plum Island.

Excuse my ignorance and naiivity having never visited or studied that part of US but does this island actually exist or is it purely fictional?

Peter

oh, yes, all the Long Island locations in DeMille's novels are real. Plum Island is a government research facility off the East End of Long island. some of the details in the DeMille novel are fictitious, but the island itself is real -- as is what he says about the Hamptons.
