If you have had one, how well was it received? I guess here is my point... we want to hold one where each guest brings some appetizer that isn't a "run of the mill" type app. We want to have everybody experiment a little.

Do you think it is OK to ask people to make something unusual?

Personally, I would love it! I have a very small appetite, so I like the idea of being able to taste a bit of this and a bit of that.. Lots of recipes available in cookbooks and on-line for appetizers, so it shouldn't be too hard for folks to figure out something to make..

When my DD was pregnant for my granddaughter we had an evening "dessert only" baby shower for her and it was a HUGE hit!

Go for it!! :flower:

We do this several times a year with a group of friends and someone different hosts it each time. In the course of the year you cannot repeat an appetizer that has already been brought so with the invitations comes the list of whats already been served.

Our first of the new year is tomorrow. As I am the fondue queen of the group I am taking both a cheese and a chocolate fondue!

Forgot to say that they are always great fun, recipes are exchanged and everyone always leaves having had more than enough to eat. There are normally about 18 of us (8 couples, 2 singles) and we ask everyone to bring 50 pieces so there is enough for everyone to have at least 2 and it's always been enough. I also always do a veggie platter and a fruit platter in addition to what everyone brings.

Sounds like a wonderful idea. Sure why not?

Just don't want to be pushy by asking that it be UNUSUAL.

You could include wording in the invite that you want people to think outside the appetizer box and that the fun will be in discovering truly unique things that are not on the appetizer list at every Fern Bar in the country ;) It's all in the wording, people don't often put much effort forth because they don't have to, but ask them to experiment and get creative and you'll be surprised at what happens!

Go ahead and ask. In the end everyone will be glad that you did. Trust me, although onion dip and chips are great (a staple of any party) your guests will be glad to try new things and have fun.

Maybe also ask them to bring a copies of the recipe to exchange. We have done cookie parties like that in the past it always went over well. We also will exchange recipes at pot lucks at work too.

The party I am attending tonight is an appetizer one as well. It looks like it will be yummy. Can't wait.

People need to step out of their comfort zone once in a while, explore, enjoy life. Wouldn't sound pushy to me.

I go to a lot of parties like this. As long as everyone doesn't bring veggies and dip, it's a great idea!!!

I'd make sure I lind of kept track of everything folks were bringing. You could even say something like "We're trying to get a bunch of different appetizers, so that we all get to try some new stuff. What's your specialty?"

You might even ask folks to bring a few copies of their appetizer recipe to share.

I'm on my way to one right now. She didn't ask for unusual, but with this crowd, that is a given LOL

I've made a Mexican Cheese cake and a chocolate-chip cheese ball

As for asking for unusual, I don't think it is rude. Another way around that might to be to have a theme, as in Mexican, middle eastern etc. Heck the theme could even be countries around the world, a continent etc.

I think it sounds great!!!! I get sick of the same old party crap....chip and dip, veggie tray....meatballs......ughhhh...... :goodvibes

I will bring whatever you want, what time is the party? :teeth:

I'm picturing:

"Chips? We don't need no stinking chips! Dips? We don't need no stinking dips!"....."You want Veggies? Well we can't handle the veggies"!

How's that? ;)

Love it! And have used it ~ with close friends LOL ;) People totally understand and appreciate it, well, our close group of friends definitely do. :) Guess it depends on how close you are.

Happy New Year!

Well not everyone is a great cook and I'd personally miss the veggies since that's my favorite part of a party but hey, this could be fun. I'm not real creative but even I've had a few ideas pop into my head just now.

DH & I hosted a party that was appetizer's only (one of many themed parties we routinely do) one year we asked that everone bring an appetizer that started with the first letter of thier first or last name...example

Bonnie brought Baked Brie with raspberry sauce

Things like that can bring out the creativeness in people - think creative not unusual

Have fun with it

We LOVE to do appetizer parties! I don't think it's pushy to ask for something different. And it's so easy to do- you know Papa Deuce- COSTCO! I bought appetizer stuff there for tonight- coconut shrimp, taquitoes, mini pizzas. My favorite homemade thing to do is homemade fried shrimp wontons. YUMMY! Maybe you could assign each person an ethnic group- like the Smith's bring something Mexican and the Brown's have to bring something Chinese. :cool1:

We have a NYE party tonight (the timing seemed perfect) and we are serving appetizers mostly. The one exception is the turducken we are serving.
