Hi Guys!!!
Wow....I guess one could say this week was quite a roller-coaster for me LOL!
It started off wonderfully with the 5K on Sunday. And then....
Well....Monday became my rest day in lieu of Sunday due to the race. So I pretty much just rested up and took it VERY easy. My legs were sore but I didn't really think too much about it. But in the afternoon I stood up and realized my legs...particularly my right leg...was incredibly heavy and stiff. I rolled up my jeans and was completely alarmed by the sight of a swollen leg. From my knee down to my foot the entire leg was swollen and by over an inch compared to the left leg. There was no redness and really no pain aside from the normal training aches and pains that I live with.

I began to panic and IM'd Speedy....who assured me that it was probably nothing major...just the effects of a brutal 3 weeks of training and a fast race on Sunday. So I iced and took advil and propped the old leg up and sure enough...over the course of the evening...the swelling went down considerably. By Tuesday morning it was pretty much back to normal so I decided to carry on with KBX that evening, albeit at a much reduced pace (read...I didn't break a sweat

). The right ankle and knee pretty much bothered me the entire class...but swelling didn't reoccur at any point that day which I was relieved about.
On Wednesday I decided to take yet another rest day

, primarily b/c I had a lot of stiffness and mild pain in the right foot, ankle and calf. Swelling was still only slight if at all. Instead of running, I chose to visit a specialty running store (omg..runner's nirvana there) and get myself some new running shoes. Basically, my hope and desire is that my leg issues are related to sneakers that have over 400 miles on them and were worn during trail runs, snow runs, ice runs, rain runs, desert runs, pavement, treadmill, beach...you name it. These old Asics have seen their share of environs over the last 7 months and probably were worn down. So I ended up having the owner thoroughly evaluate me and offer a new shoe to see how I hold up with it....I've got the new Brooks Adrenaline. The shoe is very comfortable...and offers more stability around the ankle region. Here's hoping this is the simple fix to my problem.
So finally I get out there to run on Thursday. I felt pretty good...no swelling...no major aches and pains to speak of and I was armed..or should I say footed? with my new sneakers. I didn't set out to do anything special other than survive the run. But what happened was one of the best runs of my short-lived running career. Essentially I ran 4 miles in 34:54, which calculates to an 8:44/mi. I ran my normal neighborhood hilly run and my quick time can be attributed to my first mile split of 7:55.

I felt good the entire time...really strong....AND dealt with no major pain or joint stiffness. Oh happy day!!!! I was on

. And oh yeah...Scott...what was your time again on Wednesday? Hmmm...I can't recall. Please post it here when you get a chance.
Unfortunately on Friday..I was feeling horrible. Without getting into the details...lets just say KBX was not in the cards. I did manage 30 minutes of Yoga accompanied by 100 crunches and 35 pushups.
Which brings us now to today. Saturday is my weekly Long Run. As this is an off week...it was only supposed to be 6 Miles. I was quite confident that with all the time off this week and coming off a super run on Wednesday...that this would be a piece of cake. No problem.

Sorry, allow me a minute to laugh at my naivety. Let's just say this run was gruesome. I started out my morning with stiff ankles. I was feeling discomfort from the moment I got out of bed. I should have taken advil or tylenol...but...didn't

. I didn't have my morning coffee either which may have accounted, at least in part, for my lack of energy

. I ran with a friend which was a VERY GOOD THING because otherwise I would never have completed the 6 miles. Normally I run my aches and pains out by mile 1...so the fact that every step hurt for the first mile was not surprising. What was surprising was that my aches and pains decided to tag along for the entire 6 miles

. Sooo...I finished in 63:45 (avg. pace of 10:34)...my right ankle swelled up slightly....and remained stiff until I took my ice bath and swallowed a few advil. It's frustrating to deal with the on and off again pains...however....I guess that is just part of the journey and we are all going to experience challenges along the way. I'm trying hard to stay positive and focused on the long term goal. I do have several doctor appointments lined up this week to see what's going on and see if I can hold my body together for the next 3 plus months! I guess as we become addicted to running...there is this terrifying fear that the doctors are going to tell you that you must stop running. And quite frankly...that can't happen. Bottom line

.
So that's it. The good, the bad and the ugly. Normally I like roller-coasters...but I'd really prefer just a nice easy ride next week.
