hubby wants to take the Amtrak from San Diego as we are spending a couple days there first. The last time he took a train they checked luggage. This particular trip has no luggage service. Has anyone done this and can tell me if this is going to be a pain?

Each car has a baggage storage space. It's really no issue. We've taken the train to/from Anaheim/San Diego twice. Only thing is, if you use the baggage storage it's on the lower level. My comfort zone doesn't allow my bags to be out of my view if they are within reach of just anyone. So we had to sit on the lower level when traveling.

Same experience as PrincessShmoo. Luggage is no problem -- it's all easily dropped as you enter the train. Very convenient. But...I, too, was nervous and just had to keep an eye on it. So many people getting on and off at the various stations. Just depends on your level of nervousness, I guess.

the last time i took amtrak, the basically ushered anyone who was able to go upstairs.

also, if u take the later trains, expect to be delayed. i was delayed 50 mins once.

Recently had a buddy and girlfriend take the train between SD and DL that I picked up from the Anaheim station since I had a car...while that route is one of the few effective public transportation options in SoCal by time it was said and done they could have rented a car for almost the same price as their round trip fares and would not have had to deal with the inbound delay and being locked to a fixed departure schedule which we rushed to get back to.

Wasn't really worth it for their trip and ended up being more of a hinderance.
