Amtrak from LAX to San Diego

We will be flying into LAX and I wanted to look into catching the Amtrak to San Diego and renting a car once we arrive in SD. Would this be complicated to do? How far is the train station from LAX? Do I take a taxi from LAX to the train station?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've never ridden on a train before so excuse me if I sound......well you know!
