I'm going to Orlando in Aug want to take the train but it is cheaper to fly. (Buffalo to Orlando) If you know of any deals on Amtrak please let me know.

Thanks!!

Yes....from my experience it is cheaper to fly than take Amtrak. We have taken the Auto Train to Disney and also regular Amtrak. We are AAA members and recieved a discount on the seat portion....not on the sleeping accomodation portion. I think the discount is 15%.

Check Amtrak's site....sometimes they have promotions...such as children free with adult.

We loved our train trips! They do take more time, though, than flying. So, it all depends on how much time you have and if you're willing to pay more.

The year Lady and the Tramp came out, they offered "Buy an Adult ticket get a Free kid's ticket". We used that promotion to go to a conference with DH in Montreal. It was a good deal because his company paid for his ticket (then got one free kids ticket) and then all we had to do was buy my ticket (and got the other kid's free ticket).

In that particular case it was worth it, and we had quite the adventure.

BUT I would MUCH prefer to fly than to do this ever again. At that time we were on a VERY TIGHT budget and this gave us the chance to on a vacation.

The times for getting on the train were crazy and so were the times getting off for the station closest to us. We drove to the state next to us where friends lived and used their station instead because the times worked better from there. Also the stations were in a bad part of town and I am not sure what we would have done with our car (we left it at our friend's house that time).

I don't think Amtrak is the most convenient way to travel. I don't know about the autotrain. That may be different. But for our particular experience we decided it was a "memory" and an "experience" but that one time was enough for us.

Yes, Amtrak (in my experiences) isn't worth while unless you are only going a short distance (for me Ann Arbor, MI to Chicago, IL is only $30 roundtrip, less then gas). I prefer to fly because its much faster and like you said, much cheaper. Amtrak is a very good option if you dont mind the time and you are looking for more of a relaxing journey...

we love the train..my kids do also. We are also going in August....
