Amtrak Bedroom?

Has anyone been in the bedrooms on the Amtrak trains? I'm thinking about booking one for myself, DD 5, and DD 1 for about a 9 hour trip, and I want to make sure it's enough room for us plus some luggage and a stroller.

Anything anyone can tell me about them would be great!

Thanks!

You won't have much room for luggage. The closet was about 5" wide (I am not kidding) and when the beds are pulled down, you really can't even turn around in the room without opening the door. However, they will stow your luggage and stroller for you in the baggage car, so you would really only need an overnight bag, which would fit in the room. The beds were comfortable, and it included the price of food, as well, so we enjoyed it.

definitely book one. you will be much more comfortable with your kids in a secluded room then in a coach car. You can lock the door, have a personal potty and sink. I would as the PP said check the stroller and any large luggage. And just take overnight and kids bags ( to keep them entertained).

If you go to http://www.amtrak.com and choose the tab called Traveling With Amtrak and then scroll down to the Onboard section and choose Sleeping Accommodations, you can see the optons for Viewliners cars (I believe all eastbound trains from your locale are Viewliners, but your train schedule will tell you that). There are virtual tours of all types and you can figure out what fits best for you and two youngsters. An Accessible Bedroom may work best as it would hold a stroller, two small suitcases and garment bag. Sleeper accommodations can be very fun with kids as the layout can vary and you have private space and on overnight trains a dedicated porter for your car.

Sleeper service includes meals, so on an overnight run you usually can get dinner and breakfast with the fare.

Are you referring to the rommette, which are tiny, or the bedrooms which have their own bathroom? If its the roomette, you'll be tight -but you will also be afforded a bit of peace and privacy.

If you mean the bedrooms, then you'll have no problem. We have taken 2 cross country trips in bedrooms in just under 2 years. It would be wonderful for a day or overnight. We felt a bit of cabin fever after 3 days...but it all worked out.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I definitely got the impression the roomette was too small for us. I think the bedroom will be the way to go.

It turns out our station is one of the ones where you can't check bags, so that might present a problem. Hopefully, we can magage/fit with one suitcase, stroller, and a day bag.

Thanks again...we're looking forward to it! I know its going to be an all day trip, but it has to be easier that flying alone with 2 kids.
