Amex - 2 free companion tickets

Have any of you ever done one of these promotions? My Dh just got the mailing today: 2 Free Airline Companion Tickets along with 2 months of club membership in Travel + Leisure Golf Players Club. You pay an intial one-time club processing fee of $2.99 to activate the membership. Then it says in caps THERE IS NO OBLIGATION TO CONTINUE NOW OR IN THE FUTURE. BOTH AIRLINE COMPANION TICKETS ARE YOURS TO KEEP

They give the web address for info on the tickets: www.companionticketinfo.com

What are your thoughts? Have any of you gotten tickets this way and is it worth it or are there underlying fees that we don't see?

I got that a few years ago and as I recall I looked into it and there was a catch...like limited to no seats or something like that. Anyway I didn't do it. Google and check flyertalk.

Speaking as someone who receives Delta companion certificates with our Skymiles AmEx credit card (and is thinking of dumping the card) I'd suggest that, while companion certificates look good, they don't often save you much money. I'd research it carefully and do some hunting before subbing, just as you are. I'll be keeping an eye to see what others post to this thread!

I would say it is a rip-off. They will charge you full fare on the one ticket, and all tax amounts on the companion ticket plus a $9.95 fee. Just read their terms and conditions. And they only allow specific city pairs and they do not say what the actual blackout dates are.

More than likely they are at least a full week on either side of any major holiday. And they say lower fares may be available in rare situations; I would think that they are probably available in all situations.
