Does anyone have any experience with this program?

I used to supervise a program. What are your questions....maybe I can help?

My DD just filled out an application. I would just like your overall impressions of the program. It sounds like a wonderful opportunity for her. She's done a lot of community service and loves it. I guess my main concern is about where they will live as far as safety.

I did the program (Americorp-VISTA) about 15 years ago. Has it changed much? I would think the safety would be very dependant on the site. I worked in an Applilachan town and I had my own basement apartment.

I did VISTA in Denver and loved it! There is an NCCC location there too. Which program is she applying to?

I'm hoping both of my kids will consider doing Americorps since I feel it is a great opportunity to assist the community, for personal challenge and growth, and they can help earn money for college (salary + educational award). My kids are high-school age so we're getting close to having to pay for college. There's a local program in our area I really want them to apply to. If they can get accepted, they could live at home while doing Americorps (I think?) and also attend college if they can adequately dedicate time to both.

My friend is on the WL for Americorps. It makes me sad because she really wants to do it and she's kind of putting her life on hold hoping they'll accept her to October (I think that's when she says it starts) so I hope she gets it!

I don't know what program she has applied to but I do know she is interested in helping on the Gulf Coast. They had several opportunities to assist in FL, AL, LA and Mississippi

In general, Americorps programs are run by non-profit organizations -- many of whom are run very well and some of whom are run poorly. I would begin by finding out information on the organizations with whom she is hoping to work. The Americorps program that I supervised worked in a distressed urban environment and did not provide housing since 100% of the target population for applicants was local.

The stipend offered will vary by organization as the Corporation for National and Community Service (the granting organization for all AmeriCorps programs) offers a minimum and maximum range of stipends that can be offered. The educational award is wonderful for students!

Thanks! She has already applied and found out today that all of her references have submitted their questionnaire. I guess she just waits for a phone call now.
