Such a Saskatchewan thing.

It absolutely is! It is so "Saskatchewan," that it even took me by surprise the first time I heard they were a thing. Who would have thought to put Saskatoon berries inside of a pierogi and deep fry it? Only someone from Saskatchewan.

On our way back from The Berry Barn, we also passed the Black Fox Gin Distillery and decided to stop in. I guess I could grab some Saskatchewan-made gin to bring along to the potluck, just in case people are thirsty for more than @prairie_girl's Slurpees!

I watch a few cooking shows, like Top Chef, Masterchef, etc... the competitions, not the ones that actually teach you to cook, lol. Anyway, anyone know what a "hangar steak" is? I think it's a certain part of beef, but what would that be called in a Canadian supermarket, because I've never seen it here.

I have heard of hanger steak, but I am in the US. It isn't a super common cut, I don't think??? At least I'm not tripping over them like you do flank steak, sirloin, T-bone, etc. Do you have butcher's steak there? That is a different name that it goes by.

ETA: I once read on a Blue Apron (I think???) recipe card, that it was the steak that a butcher would save for himself to take home to his family.

It is coated on the sides wirh thick chocolate curls. Delicious! They even sell them in most of our grocery stores - in the freezer section.

Gin is the answer to the question, what alcohol will you never, ever have again. I have such a story about gin but, alas, too raunchy for the filters. I still can’t smell it without gagging and it’s been 28 years LOL

Ahh, good ol’ cardboard wax cake. It is a very polarizing food here. You either love it or hate it. There is no middle ground.

They were never my cup of tea, but I know a lot of people who really like them.

For Canadian posters, has your province declared a civic holiday for the National Day of Commemoration for the passing of The Queen? Alberta just announced it is not, and the only other provinces I've heard about are Ontario and Quebec; they are also not.

For our US DIS friends, a federal holiday is not automatically a day off; civic holidays are declared at the provincial level. Federal holidays that are not adopted in a province as a stat results in only the federal government offices (and maybe a few other federally-regulated industries) being closed.

Manitoba has said yes, but only for government employees. So, our Premier gave herself and her friends the day off, but the serfs have to keep working.

What I heard was that Ontario said no because it would cost the economy too much to close on such short notice. That's a lot of people to suddenly have a day off and those that had to work (essential staff) would have to be paid more.

BC has gone with:

Crown corporations, K-12 public schools and public post-secondary institutions. The Catholic School district here in Victoria has also decided to close, I am still waiting to hear about our son's private school.

As for our company, we are staying open since we have a lot of clients who are not part of the above list and they will still want tech support.

In NB, government offices, schools and other government-related services will be closed. Private businesses are free to decide on their own.

That is a lot of shortening.

It sounds like a lot of shortening, but it’s for the base (large cookie base), cake, and frosting. We only eat one slice. I have never made the cake but have made the frosting. I know that not everyone likes it, but it’s a family favourite and a Winnipeg staple.
