Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

I meant to ask you - how does our KD compare to what the Americans call Kraft Mac and Cheese? Same identical thing? Kind of different? The noodles look a little different in pictures and maybe it doesn't taste quite the same? Do tell.

Totally agree. There’s already 400 soccer threads. As much as OP wants to think it, soccer is not really part of our culture. Sure, we have teams and I’m sure they do great, it’s not like the country shuts down every time a match is on.

1. I have not made 400 soccer threads. I do make a new thread for every big soccer event or new season though.

3. When Canada plays in the World Cups 2022/2026, that European style shut down may happen. But I’m just an American who’s passionate about the sport. You know your country better than me. :-):confused3

1. Since you have all those other threads, why not keep soccer talk there? I'm not the only one saying that. I want to stay active on this thread but the soccer talk sure makes it hard to stay.

2. Don't care, so won't read. sorry

3. Yes, Canadians know Canada better. We are telling you soccer just isn't as big a deal here as you want it to be. It's good to be excited about things but it doesn't have to feature in every single thread, even if you're the one who started it. Yes, you can post whatever you want, but there are more appropriate threads to do so. If we want to participate, we can find them. I'm really not trying to be a hard butt, and if I was the only one saying it, I'd let it drop.

I forgot to tell y'all but my sister-in-law and her boyfriend did get tickets for the Formula 1 race in Montreal-if anyone remembers that was a conversation about them liking the races and it being mentioned they should try to go to the one in Canada. I never even told them about this thread and the prior talks we had but I think it was around Christmas that they mentioned they would be going so if they do still end up going (darn covid you know) I'm sure they'll have a lovely time.

Sports is a part of culture. I posted the last thing about soccer on this thread because it was historic and because a previous poster ask a question (which is perfectly fine to do so). I don’t post many soccer things on this thread but for the little I do (for a specific event), you can just skip over it. I’ve posted many more non soccer questions than anything else. And I’ve said as well on this thread that if you want to talk about a big sports game happening in Canada (Olympics/NHL/curling), go for it.

Maybe you could start a completely separate thread called, "Canadians who want to only talk about big sports games happening in Canada" thread.

I'm with some of the others. I really enjoy this thread and the discussions that have taken place regarding Canadian/American culture. While I won't argue with your assertation that sports are a part of culture, and that those of us who want to skip over the sports part can do so, I will admit to being a person who gets excited when they see the thread move to the top with new discussion, only to go, "Oh. Sports/Soccer again! What a disappointment." No matter how monumental the achievement, I think you greatly underestimate a Canadian individual's ability to not care about sports like soccer, Olympics, even hockey at times. Many of us hold no opinion on games like these whatsoever and individuals that are that hard core about soccer et. al., are not likely seeking out camaraderie by reading and posting on a Disboards thread called "Americans and Canadians Culture Q&A."

That being said, I think that what people have been trying to voice is that we (can I say we???) don't really want to discuss any kind of "big sports game happening in Canada (Olympics/NHL/curling)" in this particular thread. You have every right to keep on doing it, but in time, you are going to lose the interest of those who are participating. I would continue to stick with the types of conversation starters that you notice people have really taken an interest in and not the ones where people have repeatedly told you, "We don't care about this as much as you want us to." You have created a great thread, where your audience is providing valuable feedback on how to continue to make it enjoyable. It is up to you whether you decide to continue helping it to thrive or let it die a slow death as people lose interest in the content and stop viewing it all together.

This is perfectly said.

I do agree with y'all about the soccer stuff but I long gave that point up here. They are the OP as well and we are all active participants in this thread or we are not. At this point you can put the OP on ignore, bypass the content you don't like or leave the thread because just as much as that can be a distractor to the thread so is the "will you stop" comments too. FWIW they aren't the only poster who has over time made this thread not as enjoyable-plenty of blame on that from various posters (including at times myself if I'm being honest with myself). I stepped away from this thread for a while more because the discussion wasn't of an interest to me and I just popped back on to share the news about sister-in-law and her boyfriend intending to visit Montreal for the race that's pretty much it at the moment. I could ask for recommendations on what else they can do in Montreal if anyone else is interested in sharing that.

Yes, great for them ! I just saw the dates . I can’t imagine another Grand Prix being cancelled, but… what do they like to do ? If they are really into racing/cars, I would say head to Peel and Crescent street that weekend as it will have all kinds of cars, merchants, street music, very fun.
There is the Casino of Montreal, if they are into that.
Summer is fantastic, and if I know their likes I could say so much.

I think they may be only marginally interested in the casino but your suggestion about going down to Peel and Crescent street sounds right up their alley! They would love all those added things too. At this point the next time I may see them is Super Bowl Sunday so I'll be sure to ask then (sorry it's that far out though) their interests. It probably would be helpful to know how long they plan on being there too.

Off the top of your head is there like one or two cultural sites or natural/outdoorsy sites (they enjoyed some of the U.S. National Parks they went to last year hiking and stuff is why I mentioned that) near there you think would be a "must see" although I recognize that's still pretty vague lol.

No worries, anytime is fine.

1) I would say Mount Royal
2) There is St. Helene’s Island, which will be where the race will be held, so if they will be in town a few days prior or after would be quite the place to see. La Ronde is there. There are lots of trails, music outdoors on the weekend . The Expo 67 Biosphere is left, a lot to see. This can be connected from the metro/subway
3) Botanical Gardens is just magical to see

My favourite place is Old Montreal, so if they are staying downtown, they can easily walk, it’s cobbled streets. Very Europe-like, have a coffee and a baguette, and there is a lot to Explore

In the summer every week there is a festival, comedy, fireworks, jazz, etc. Hopefully we return to that.
Hope this helps. Can you tell I can’t wait for summer 😊

Americans/Canadians, who is your favorite musician/band from your country?
I totally missed answering this, what with all of the sports talk going on.

I can't pick just one, as there are so many good ones. Harlequin was/is my all-time favourite, as they were the first "real" band that I owned a cassette for. Streetheart would be a close second. I was really enjoying Headly (should I even be admitting that???) for awhile and then that came to an grinding halt after the news about the lead singer broke. More recently, I have been listening to Walk Off the Earth (so sad when beard guy passed away) and Jeffery Straker (amazing folk artist).

No. Residency requirements mean people cannot be absent from the country for years at a time while still receiving full benefits - it’s hardly egregious. :sad2: If one wants to emigrate, they should formally do so.
they are winter visitors...as thousands are here in yuma...they stay there 5 months, improve our infrastrucutue with their needs (i.e. massive grocery store and outlets. but it is so hard to arrange appointments in Canada, they have to travel back to meet that specfic medical need. What is egregious will be the packets of paper signing on the sale of their home, though they had have a crowd....again....blocking our street with folks looking for cheap housing in the USA>

I was going to suggest Mount Royal as well. It’s beautiful at night to see the city all lit up. I mostly remember a building with a triangle roof..maybe it was green as well? It’s been almost 20 years since I’ve been there.

We are all heading to Toronto in June for my youngest brothers wedding and my daughter is going a week early to spend time in Montreal. I’m very jealous.

Egregious? Documents can be signed electronically.

I haven't figured out what your crowd comment is getting at.

housing here in yuma is going thru the roof, everyone fleeing California and other states to arizonia tax haven. The crowd is the cars that are parking on our street for appointments for viewing the home....they don't have open houses here, no need when homes are being sold in 24hours...as theirs did this morning. the volume of traffic generated by internet is tremendous....folks who would know better would think a garage sale was happening.

Curious of how this is relevant to this thread? 🤔
