Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

I may have had 2L of maple syrup in m suitcase when I came back this summer. Though none of it was actually for me :)

Do you know what Vegemite is? It’s a spread for toast and sandwiches from Australia. It has a very distinctive look and taste. You either love it or hate it. I’m in the love it category.

The last time my parents went to Australia they came home with a stockpile because it is not readily available here. They came home with….19 POUNDS of it lol

It did last a long while but the tubs are gone. There is a mom and pop store a few hours away that sells it, but it’s very expensive.

Is it much different than this abomination? I've tasted it several times and can't for the life of me figure out who ever decided to call this food... :crazy2:

I’ve had to referee marmite versus vegemite debate as in which I was worried blood would be shed.

I call it the gross British obsession.

Edit: Edited to not include others in my response.

popcorn:: Please do expand on (what I presume are) the subtle but perhaps very important nuances. I have a morbid fascination with things that are totally gross and repelling.

We may have stumbled onto an idea here, Frozen: "Eating With Americans"! So many stereotypes, the ways to punk them would be endless!
We might have to stop and talk to Rick, while we are heading east on our road trip, to see if we can get him on board. It shouldn't take much convincing. It sounds like a viable idea.
Europeans often make fun of North Americans for liking/not liking the sport and think we are all unintelligent when we try to explain ours views on it. If I walk into a pub in England and say I’m American, the first thing they will tell me is that I’m an idiot in regards to the sport and that MLS is poor quality (99% of them have never watched the league). I actually have a better time talking to a North American causal/non-soccer fan about the sport than a die hard European fan. Most Europeans want a World Cup with only top Euro and South American national teams because they believe the rest of the world isn’t worthy to compete. And that makes me sad since soccer is supposed to be the most democratic and inclusive sport in the world.
I'm sorry everyone! I am 100% responsible for saying the "S" word and bringing it back into conversation. I am willing to accept my punishment, whatever you choose...making me wear buffalo plaid for 100 days straight, having me scrub the front steps of the Parliament Building with a toothbrush, or taking away my license to carry maple syrup. :rotfl2:

I don’t really remember (like you, I don’t care for either). I think that the consistencies are different and one has more vitamins or minerals (or maybe just different).

The only “marmite” I like are the ones we have here in December which are made of chocolate:

Make you?!? That would be a "get to" not a "have to". :goodvibes Enjoy!!

As for Rick, now that he's all laid in for winter, he may have an opening in his schedule for us.

Majority do. I’ll find a statistic to back up my statement.

My guess is that the majority do not have appreciable knowledge or opinions of either product. I'd further guess that many of a certain age are aware of Vegemite only because they heard it in a Men At Work song. But I would be interested to hear other American DISsers chime in!

I have eaten both and hate them both. I’ll make a poll.

Wear a Canada scarf during the opening match for Canada’s historic match in the World Cup for 2 hours. 🤣
