Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Yes, it was a nickname due to Al Capone and the bootleg tunnels. It does not make them, as you claimed the « many sites » stated, equivalent.
Okay, I’ll say there are multiple websites that use the nickname “little Chicago” for Moose Jaw. I’m an American who’s trying to gain more knowledge on Canada. Especially on places most Americans have never have heard of. You could be a little nicer about it. Thanks for your input though.

Nope. Don't go getting them confused. Ha! That store would be Moosejaw. We had one here before it closed.

ETA: Here, as far as where I live now in the US.

Thanks for the correction. I knew that it wasn’t a store about Moose Jaw (the city) but didn’t note my typo.

The thing that cracks me up every time is that they are called Moosejaw Mountaineering and Backcountry Travel. I can't think of a single place on the planet that is any less topographically suited for mountaineering besides Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The closest "mountain" is Mount Blackstrap, outside of Saskatoon, and if you know anything at all about that "pimple on the prairies," you will know that it also was not designed with mountaineering in mind. (For those not in the know, Mount Blackstrap is a man-made hill in the middle of the flat prairies, built so that people could go skiing without having to travel very far. While it is a really really high hill, I think describing it as a mountain would be stretching things a little.)

So people don’t drive Zamboni all over Saskatchewan? LOL.

Hey! You watch yourself @ronandannette! Them's fightin' words! Moose Jaw can be every bit as hip as Chicago!!! We have a casino, and a mineral spa, AND a tunnel museum. Chicago doesn't have any of those amenities. We are also (once again) home to the world's largest moose after we beefed up Mac's rack to beat out those Norwegians who were trying to steal our fame! Let me tell you, Moose Jaw is THE place to be!
Ooops - sorry. {{insert blushing smilie here}}. I thought we were talking about the actual Moose jaws, but if we're veering off into hips, I'll have to google some different images. LOLOLOL

Here's a nice one for you Buzz...

I was born and raised near a small, northern Alberta city called Grande Prairie. It actually has an official sister city in the States, conveniently enough also named Grande Prairie.

No way!!!

That is where the other half of my relatives live! I bet you know all of my kinfolk. Maybe you ARE my kinfolk!

Grande Prairie is worse than Moose Jaw! (I've been there as well, and I have no idea what you guys think is so grande about it! :rotfl: ) I remember when we drove up for my aunt's funeral. We stopped outside of Edmonton for the night. The next day we drove and drove and drove on our Zamboni and it seemed like we would never get there. I remember thinking, "I had no idea how far this place was from Edmonton!"

(Sorry, the only reason I even made this comment is so I can use ALL the emojis!!)

It gets worse. I was actually raised on a farm 20 miles east of town. If your kin are from there, we are most definitely related. :teeth: And if you think it's far from Edmonton, try driving back and forth seven or eight times a year from Calgary. :drive:8 hours on average and that's at speeds much faster than your Zamboni goes.

I’m going to need some resolution on this. If you guys are related, that would be amazing lol
