I was watching CBS News Sunday Morning and they did a piece on Don McLean and the song American Pie. For the past thirty years the song has been played 274 times a day, 11 times an hour for a total of 3 million times. He also kept all rights to the song. He stated the reason that he is now allowing the song to be used, is to introduce it to a new generation of listeners.
