hi, have just been flicking through the debate board and saw this mentioned on a thread, a man was deported from america becouse he had missed a payment on his company car, i thought this was a bit over the top and wondered had any one else heard of this before, it was mentioned by rydersdodisney who is from england and i just wondered if i had missed this from news over here, has anyone else heard about this being done before it seems a bit extreme, but it did get us wondering!!!! susie

It was front page news in the Eastern Daily Press last week. He claims he was held in leg shackles whilst his wife was sent out of the airport to "fend" for herself.

Daipp lets hope everybody doesnt think the rest of us from Norfolk, are like this couple!!!, they certainly didnt help themselves!!!

I believe this article made the Sunday Times last weekend. Prior to this ( about two weeks ago) I also read an article in the Sunday Times about a jounalist who had entered the states on numerous occasions via the Visa waiver programme for journalist conferences and similiar events. On the last occasion he travelled which was recently he landeed at LA and informed immigration what he was doing in the USA. They became very official, prevented entry, based on the fact that they classed his visit as a working trip and thus would need a VISA. This male was then basically arrested, cuffed, shipped out to a detention centre (prison) for the night. No food, small bench no bedding, Basically he was a prisoner) in the morning he recieved a breakfast and was taken back to the airport again cuffed and eventually placed on a plane back to the UK. This person worked as a journalsit for the Times.
Now call me simple but I believe that these type of actions are creating a negative effect on tourism and any would be travellers who intend on going to the states. I have certainly got reservations about going again. The behaviour is something I would expect from an Ultra right wing country not the home of liberty and freedom. If they can not differentiate between terrorists and tourists there is going to be big problems Anyway if this type of treatment continues I for one will be going elsewhere. :(

I'm not sure why you say this. What did the couple do wrong? Nothing as far as I can see...
If that's the level of support you can expect from the British Embassy, it certainly is a cause for concern.

Interesting.
I wonder how many people out there are now worrying about things in their past. Will that "on the spot" speeding fine in Portugal come back to haunt me. I'm interrogating my wife in case there's something sinister in her past. She did give that bloke at passport control one of her scary dirty looks last time we went to Malta.
Joking aside, it must of been very traumatic for them.

Another article in the Sunday times today regarding US immigration. Apparently the Foreign office have received a large increase in complaints about the treatment UK travellers have recieved on entering the US.

They cited one case were a female landed at JFK. She was seperated from her party and questioned regarding a trip to the US some eight years earlier. The immigration official formed the opinion that she had stayed four days over the 90 day allowance ( which was apparently incorrect). As a result of this MAJOR breach of immigration law she was then put in leg shackles and detained till the next day. She was then placed on a flight back to the UK.
This is officialdom gone stark raving mad. She appeared to be a decent member of society going about her legitimate business and has been treated like a terrorist. Can they not tell the difference.

Unfortunately, there are a few who can't. :( Apologies on behalf of my overzealous countrymen.

No apoligies needed, just common sense by the few, over zealous immigration officials. No doubt if the same thing happened to them they would be horrified.

Undoubtly we have over zealous immigration officials here to.

I think there should be a common sense course devised for people who hold such power. Something like, is this peron a threat to whichever county they are entering. If the answer is yes, deport them, if the answer is no,( and provided they fit the criteria for entry) let them in. Simplistic I know but it would save injustices as has occured in previously mentioned posts.
