American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Dh and I were watching last night and we decided that America did Chris a favor by sending him home.... Both of the Idol songs were totally cheese-ball... I'm sure Chris would have done something to "spice it up" but there is probably only so much they can do.

This was my thought as well.... A Taylor/Chris showdown would have been so much better, but Chris is far better off, having just a 3 month commitment to AI....

Of the two remaining, DH & I thought Taylor did a better job last night, even though both of the singles were just lousy... Taylor & Kat didn't have much to work with, Taylor was able to infuse some of his with some soul which made it sound a bit better....

Did you notice how Ryan had Chris stand up to speak early on in the show? I thought that was interesting....

just the opposite here for me.

everytime i dial, and i am speed dialing, i am getting thru to taylor.

scary.......it's never busy now.

This is Exactly what happens to me. I got through EVERY time. I was wondering if there are only so many lines open per state or region or something....maybe so many open per long distance phone carrier?

I don't know but I always feel bad when I read that so many are having problems and I have no problem at all.

AI knows where their bread gets buttered... I'm sure they'll capitalize on that more tonight, and throughout the tour. Even if the voters don't give them the most marketable idol as winner, the producers are smart enough to recognize what's what.

You mean the same diet Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia and Carrie had to go on?

I don't think any of them looks like a skeleton, especially Ruben. .

I was thinking the same thing..I haven't seen any of them become especially skinny after winning idol....

Chris was interviewed by our local paper and he said that every person in the rock music industry has told him that is was for the best that he was voted off. He couldn't be a rocker and hold that title. He was hurt at first but now knows it was what was best for his career.

The final song, Katherine was AWFUL. The first part of Taylor's he didn't sound very good, but the last half he did very well, I thought.

I guess I'm in the minority because I thought Katharine did a good job with her song.

I agree that Taylor didn't start out too strong, but ended better.

I tried off and on from 9 - 11 to vote for Taylor last night on all 3 lines and couldn't get through at all... :confused3

Can't wait until tonight!! :cool1:

American Idol REALLY needs to get a new songwriter - those new songs were just plain horrible! Unless..maybe the plan is to see what each singer can do with a stupid, boring song? :confused3 There is no way I would buy a CD from anyone if the songs were bad, no matter who puts it out!

I agree that Taylor won round 1, but I think Kat without question won Round 2. I thought Taylor's Levon was absolutely boring. He did nothing with that song and I can't believe no one here has mentioned it. :confused3
I think Round 3 goes to Taylor also. Though I didn't like either song, Taylor's was a better performance.

There is nothing really you can do with that song. I love that he just sang it without any "extras". It's one of my favorite songs!!

I could not get through at all for Taylor and I tried various times and various lines.

Well I was thinking of Season 2 when I know they did 2 new songs. Clay sang Unchained Melody and Here, There, and Everywhere (I have no idea if that's the name of the song but that's how it went). He never sang those songs during the season. I honestly don't remember the last 2 seasons though. I was just so obsessed with Clay and Season 2 that I remember everything he sang for every week.

Didn't Clay sing Bridge over Troubled Water and was absolutely amazing? I think you are right that he sand Here, There and Everywhere too. I just remember Bridge over Troubled Water being amazing.

Glad to hear that it seems he's okay with it... He certainly looked shocked when he left... I think he know's he'll be around for a long while to come..

Yes, that was Clay's third and final song of the night....

I only got through for Taylor once in 4 hours! DD didn't get through at all and she was calling all his numbers.

I don't think it was fair for Randy to criticize song choice when it came to Katharine's last song. I swear that man is about as eloquent as a two year old with a speech impediment. He knew she didn't have any choice about that song, but yet that was all he could think of to say. If I had one AI wish, I would wish for both Randy and Paula to be replaced by judges who know how to SPEAK.

I thought he was trying to say that the song sucked but she did the best she could (which I don't think she really did). It was the one time of the night that I felt he was actually making an excuse FOR her.

I do agree, however, that there really wasn't a need for judges last night. Everyone knew who they were voting for and the judges pretty much just got in the way.

I found last night’s show to be interesting rather than lackluster as Simon put it. Two mostly opposite styles were doing their best for America’s votes. Katharine, at times a technical wizard with her voice and Taylor, a master of crowd control went head to head. Here’s my take on the terrific top two.

Round One

Katharine: Resinging Black Horse and a Cherry Tree, this version just didn’t move me like the original. And what the heck was up with resinging songs anyway? She stood up this time and did whatever those moves are that she does to the music. I think this might have been part of the reason I didn’t like version 2 as much as her sitting version. Still, it was OK and she gets a 9.

Taylor: Taylor’s repeat choice was Living for the City. Wowser! He has that rare ability to take you to what ever alternate universe he’s living in and that song was a first class ticket. Fun! Amazing!! Too Cool!!!! However, that was probably the worst jacket I’ve ever seen on AI. :rotfl2: Taylor wins round 1 with a 10+.

Round Two

Katharine: Repeating probably her best performance of the season, she sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It was perfection the first time and it was perfection this time. She gets a 10

Taylor: Where his first go round of Levon was incredibly moving, this one sort of fell flat. The spontaneity of the original just didn’t happen tonight. He gets a 9.

Round two goes to Kat.

Round Three

Katharine: And now the dreaded AI songs of the year. GAG! Well they gave Kat a turkey called My Destiny. This is not to be confused with an old Paul Anka song called You Are My Destiny which was actually pretty good. First of all the pitch of this song was too high for her in parts and way too low especially in the beginning. By the time she got to the end, the shrill screaming had starting and my thumb was twitching on the mute button. I’m thinking, well it wasn’t a great song and then I had an epiphany. What if it wasn’t totally the song but the singer? What if the definition of a great singer is one who can take a not so great song and making it good?
Sorry Kat but this final effort by you only gets a 7.

Taylor: Taylor’s turkey was titled Do I Make You Proud. Just the title of it set my teeth on edge. The beginning was pretty boring but somewhere just past the middle of this piece, Taylor was using his skills as a performer and the song became alive. He took a mediocre piece of music and rocked it! We felt it here, the audience felt it and even the judges felt it. For making me like an original AI song, Taylor gets a 10.

Who I voted for:
I tried and tried and tried from 10 p.m. thru 11:15 and got a few fast busy signals but mostly the dreaded All Lines Are Busy! So I did not get one single vote in for Taylor last night. Disappointing but good for the Soul Man.

I believe that Taylor will win this competition tonight and he should. From “You’ll never get voted through to Hollywood” to this year’s American Idol, ain’t life grand?!

As always, JMHO!!

We got through for Taylor 10 TIMES by 9:45. DD wanted to vote last night so I told her she could only until bedtime. I was a little worried because she got through so much.

ETA-- my co-worker got through for Taylor 8 times by 10:00

I couldn't get through for Taylor at all last night, so I hope that's a good sign (meaning EVERYONE else was voting for him too!). I DO think they were pimping Taylor unbelievably last night, and I hope it doesn;t hurt him in the end. I almost felt bad for Kat. When Kat mentioned they never played the key in her ear piece for her acappella portion of "Over the Rainbow" I immediately thought it was done on purpose by the producers to sabotage her, but thankfully she pulled the song off in a HUGE way, keeping the playing field level.

As for those tow DOGS they called the original songs...BARF-OLA! They were, contrite, cheesy, melodically challenged, and boring. The lyrics were silly, almost like it was written by a 12 year old ("mommy...what words rhyme with proud?"), just as ALL the past songs were. It is a total anti-climax to have the final song be those two duds.

My winner, of course would be Taylor. Tonights finale is a can't miss winner!

My DD6 got through for Taylor 2 times in about an hour. Once she went to bed I kept trying with no luck. She really gets into it. Last year she cried when Bo lost and this year when Kevin and Bucky went home. I am just hoping for a tear free night tonight.
