American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

What bothers me more about the Taylor thing is that it's not a "modern" song. I think, like Bicker said in a previous post, the point was to sing something old and something new.

Granted, the producers let it fly, so be it...and I'm not getting all worked up about it. I just think it's kinda odd and somehow it seems to twist the rules a little too much for my tastes.

But even Ryan stated the theme was to pick a song from any Current Billboard chart, the song Taylor sung is from an album currently on a Billboard chart. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/char...Top+Pop+Catalog

Listen, I'm not trying to start a fight over this Taylor chart thing...I mean, I like the guy (not as much as I used to, but...). Still, I think the point of this whole night was to sing one current and one old song. Yes, I realize he was within the "rules," but I think that it cannot be denied that it "twisted" the rules a little bit.

BTW, I must say that I love the new line in your signature, Papa Deuce..."She fought the good fight"!!!!

Wow.... I have NEVER said this before, but Katherine doing that KT Tunstall song was SMOKING! Great version, and she looked amazing.

I think it comes down to Taylor and her for the finals. And that is cool because I don't want Chris to win and he is my favorite.

Taylor singing Play that Funky Music...?????? :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Oooh Papa, I've got you all figured out. You like women on their knees. ;)

Taylor was great. I've been trying to get thru but only get busy signals.

Must not say anything.... think baseabll........ :p

I really liked Taylor tonight. I think that as long as he is within the rules, any song is fair game.

Same here. It took me literally over 50 calls to get in just a few votes for Taylor. I'm sure that he is safe. :yay:

Play That Funky Music....ought to be Taylor's flippin ANTHEM! Now the only thing that could have made that better is if we could have heard his voice. That band is obnoxiously loud. I mean I hung on every note and there were many times that we could not even hear him.

Kat commented on it - did you catch it? She said something about not being able to hear herself.

My biggest problem with Taylor's choice is that it communicates just what you're getting with him: Nothing new. Why is he so afraid to sing new music? Is that the kind of career he hopes to have? Just singing covers of old songs? I'd never buy into that. I might go to a performance on a cruise ship like that, and might even go to a local fall festival with that kind of music, but I wouldn't really commit to a performer who's just giving me "his own take" on stuff other folks made famous already. This was one of the idols' few opportunities to show they had some ability to work with new material. He simply decided that wasn't for him. Very bad choice.

It's early yet. The West Coast hasn't even seen the show yet.

He's actually a pretty good songwriter. Most likely the only one of the bunch. Has 2 CDs of his own stuff. So...it's not only "new" but "original" too. No covers. It's classy, soulful stuff; maybe not for everyone. That's the kind of career he hopes to have.

Y'know what? I'd buy any albums by Chris, Katharine or Taylor. I like all three equally, but I voted for Katharine tonight because her verion of "Black Horse & a Cherry Tree" was better than the original -- which I've listened to a dzn times since Kat sang it tonight.

I like Taylor when he's doing his OWN thing -- not covering.

I've downloaded a couple of Taylor's songs and I do like them a lot and they're in rotation on my iPod.

But...I do agree with Bicker that Taylor's choice of "Something" was a cheap shot. Despite what anyone says, the point of this show was to showcase something old and something new. Taylor took the easy way out...and personally, I thought his take on the Beatles song was one of his worst yet. His "Play That Funky Music" was fun and definitely enjoyable, but this second song to me was a cop-out despite the fact that it was within the "rules."

Katherine has always been my favorite, but I thought her first song tonight was really bad. I had never heard her 2nd song. Taylor just makes me laugh.
