American Idol fans - Please explain something if you can

I've never watched one episode of this show but I see its starting again and have seen lots of commercials for it. There are obviously some people performing who sing just HORRIBLY from what I've seen on the commercials! I can see why the producers picked these poor folks to be on the show (so everyone can have a good laugh or groan) but why on earth would these people even try out??? Do they SERIOUSLY think they can sing??? Are they on there just so they can say they've been on T.V? Just wondering if someone could clue me in!

We've had the same thing on UK Pop Idol and Popstars Liz. You have to ask yourself why no-one has ever told these people before that they can't sing.

Over here in the UK we had Popstars the Rivals before Christmas. They were auditioning for 2 groups, a boy band and a girl band and then they went head to head for the Christmas number 1. Anyway, these twins auditioned singing a song that there mother wrote. They were absolutely awful and never went through to the next round but a record company signed them up and they released the awful "Cheeky Song". It spent weeks at number 2

Having seen the first American Idol, I believe that these folks really think they have great singing voices. Some think that they're so unique in their style that others would want to hear them. They truly have no clue that they sing terribly - and the sobbing of some when they don't go on in the competition is so laughable. I'm sure some just want to be on TV - no matter what!

I missed the first 4 episodes last year, and can hardly WAIT till Tuesday! I KNOW I do NOT sing good, so you will NOT find me Auditioning! I wonder if they had to sign something before hand, especially if they didn't make it to the next level, giving permission for the tape to be used that showed them really sounding BAD!

I missed all of the 'good episodes' last time. This time I'll be at WDW when it starts so I'm going to miss some again. I would really like to see them though

If you are talking about the commercials that are on TV, I am pretty sure that they are NOT the ones who actually make it to the show to compete. They are simply those that have choosen to "try out" and didn't make it. I could be wrong, I didn't watch much of it last year. I only watch the last 3 shows I think...I still think Justin should have won.

I think anyone can audition if they stand in line and wait
I imagine they only take so many auditions like first come first serve for a certain amount of people like 100 per city or something
These people really think they can sing
the first episodes are the best with all the crazy people on
watch it for a few good laughs if you can

After years in community theatre, you would be surprised at the people who think they sound good when they sing. Meanwhile, everyone else is holding their ears and can't believe what they're hearing!

There will always be those who have confidence and sound terrible and those who sound wonderful, but lack the confidence to be heard...

What bugs me is that I heard Kelly Clarkson say that everyone has to be screened before they ever get to audition in front of Simon et al. So those people are just being put through because it makes good television. I don’t mind since it IS funny, but it’s kind of dishonest, and I wonder if some decent people are eliminated in order to make room for those people. Some of those horrible ones must just be doing it as a joke…I hope!

I think they honestly think they can sing. Or just want to be on TV.
