American Idol Attraction

There is no "booth," contrary to what you see in the FAQs. You sing for a "casting director," a cappella, anything you want (a "real" song, not something that hasn't been published). The casting director will give you some pointers -- I don't know if they do that if they don't want you at all, although I would presume they might -- my DS 16 tried out and the casting director suggested he be a little more animated, but passed him on to the next level. If you actually make it to the point where they're going to put you in a show, the producers will give you quite a few suggestions, and you get 10 minutes with a professional vocal coach who will work on song styling and movement. It can be really helpful, not just for the AI thing, but for anyone who likes to sing (my son is in theatre in school and lead singer for a band, so this was worthwhile for lots of reasons). Have fun and good luck!

Thanks but that sounds a little scary now - don't know whether to let DD know this or not - she's 14 BTW, kitch4 and I believe this is the minimum audition age. She is also doing music and drama at school and when she's older wants to go to college to continue with this - she dreams of a part in the West End (London) or even Broadway in the future.

I wondered about the first try-out, when you pick your own song - I presume you sing without music - is this the part where you sing in a 'booth'? Do you sing the whole song or part of a song? How does it work - DD is going to be trying it out in about 3 weeks time.
My dd had an audition time set up before we even got to WDW...did it on the AIE area of the WDW site. So, we figured we would get to DHS at rope drop, get some TSM FPs and then head over to AIE and let her audition. But, we started talking to a CM who was looking for guests who wanted to audition..we were in line to enter the park but it was still about 10 mins to opening time. When we told him that dd already had an audition scheduled, he pulled us out of the line and took us right into the park. Dd auditioned right there, inside the park entrance. I'm still not sure what she auditioned with though..but it was about 20 secs of music. They did say that normally, auditionees sang that first audition at the AIE building..inside I guess.
I have to say that there was a huge list of songs to choose from. There was an older dad who was auditioning and he had no trouble finding 3 or 4 songs he wanted to sing. And dd already had an idea what she was going to audition with..based on the listing she saw online a week or so previously.
The only auditioning issue I saw was that two of the 'older' people auditioning didn't know how to use an iPod!!! The AIE CM had to explain it to them. You used the iPod to listen to the music you wanted to use.

But, I will say that although they don't send through any 'bad' singers, they do allow the judges to be somewhat brutal in their comments. So, if anyone is going to be overly sensitive about less than nice feedback, I would suggest they give this one a pass. I was sure my dd would melt when she got some less than favorable feedback from a judge...but she held up just fine. That really surprised me. She is usually really sensitive and cries at the drop of a hat!!!

As long as they know that going in they would be fine. I am sure it is different being the one onstage, but being in the audience you could tell the "Simon" judge said those things as part of the act. I thought the judges tried to go along the lines of the Randy, Paula, Simon personas.

LOVED this attraction!! we enjoyed it so much we ended up going to 2 more shows that day and even stayed for the finale show. as a matter of fact, we are arriving on sat. and usually we just get settled in and don't start our days in the park until the next morning but we are going to watch the finale show @ 7 that night. it was so entertaining!!

Do they always have photopass photographers that take photos and then give you a card at the end? Since you can't take photos in there, right?
