I'm starting to look at christmas gifts. My daughter is 5 and I was thinking of American Girl for her. What would be a good starter doll for her? She's into sports (gymnastics, Choi Kwang Do) and being a girl.

I would do Bitty Baby unless she already has her. I'm waiting for a little bit longer to buy DD6 an American Girl Doll. I just love dressing my DD like her Bitty baby and she loves it too. The clothes go up to 6x so I figured when she outgrows the clothes then we will move on to an American Girl Doll. They grow up so fast.

Just a thought. :goodvibes

NOOOOOOOO! Don't start. Burn the catalogs.

I weep when I think of the money my wife and mother have spent on these dolls for my daughter. They had to go to New York and visit the store. Once you start you can't stop. Just say no. Buy her some Legos instead.

(I am only HALF kidding)

lkjasd is so right! lol

They just opened a store in LA and I just had to drag my DH and DD for a visit!....

I too think I would start with Bity Baby. DH actually bought DD Kiersten when she was 5 or 6...I think she was a little young to appreciate her. Her hair is a mess! lol but she loves her.

Have FUN!

DD6 has the Bitty Twins and just got her first "regular" doll last Xmas (from Santa, of course). DD6 named her Marie. She plays with the twins & Marie pretty much equally, although Marie is starting to edge ahead. As a matter of fact, we are going to NYC tomorrow & plan on stopping by American Girl to pick up a new outfit.

If your DD likes to play with baby dolls, I'd say go for the Bitty Baby or Bitty Twins. Otherwise, get the regular doll.

Both my girls have Bitty Baby, and they both have American Girls. DD 9 has 2, Kit and a Today doll, DD 7 had Nellie. This year they was Jess and Emily. Which is fitting as DD 7 is Emily. I agree start with Bitty Baby, and see how it goes. I bought both my girls their American Girls at the first Christmas after they turned 6. They both take very good care of them and they both still play with Bitty Baby. Your daughter will enjoy whatever you choose.

Fortunately for me my mother and step-mother are really into American Girl dolls. :teeth: Both DDs have bitty babies and DD7 just got Elizabeth for her birthday. I'm thrilled she got one of the historical dolls because I love history. Plus the girl of the year is named Jess...and so is an evil relative of mine :lmao:

I suppose when the time comes to go to the cafe in NYC, I'll have to fork out my own money to have the doll's hair done!

I miss my DD playing with these dolls. Now she's almost 15. :teeth:

I would say start out with a Bitty Baby, Bitty Twins, or how about one of the dolls that you can personalize to look just like her? Those are GREAT keepsakes! :)

I agree that Bitty would be the best starter doll for a 5 year old.

My DD LOVE AG dolls. My step-mom LOVE buying AG stuff  . She has 4 of the girl dolls, BOTH sets of Bitty Twins, the horse, beds, etc., etc., etc. They do make great birthday/Christmas gifts.

I bought a doll for my 4 year old. Her older sister had a couple 'girl' dolls (not AG) but they weren't baby dolls. DD has lots of baby dolls and was quite specific. She is a BIG girl and didn't want a BABY, she wanted a GIRL. So, I picked one to look like her and she is very happy with it and takes good care of it. Of course, big sister figured out she has dolls, but not an AG doll, and so guess what she wanted for her bday. LOL She wanted Kit. I would recommend her for a first doll because she has short hair and is very cute. :teeth:

My DD started with Bitty Baby when she was 3. Last year she got the Bitty Twins all all the stuff that comes with them. She barely played with them! Now she wants the new Emily AG doll. She wants different stuff, like the dream bath, some clothes, to go with her so I already started buying that stuff. I'm waiting a bit for the doll because she is not positive that is the one she wants yet. I just hope she plays with it!

BTW, has anyone got the new Christmas catalog yet? DD is waiting for it so I called. The lady said they were sending them out on Monday. Can't wait!

I Love my american girl dolls and as a teen still dress them up and sit them in my room for holidays. they are wonderfull for girls because they are a good influence and wear clothes that little girls should wear and in the books they are strong and confident intellegent girls. also take a look at what time period you daughter is into because each dool is "themed" diffrently. And all of the AG doll clothes fits all of the diffrent girls (not bitty baby).

One of the great things about AG dolls are the books - my dd read some of the books and decided on the dolls she wanted based on them. I'd wait until she was reading chapter books.

My DD is 5 and loves her Bitty Baby doll. Last year Santa brought her a girl twin and her brother a boy twin (he needed a baby of his own.) She loves to dress like her baby and is really into them. She likes the big dolls, but I don't think she is really ready yet. But she is the oldest and doesn't have a lot of influence from older kids, so she still plays babies a lot.

I started Macy out with an AG today doll that looked like her when she was 5. I had gotten her a bitty baby before that but she didn't like babies. She wanted a "girl" like her. After "Holly" I also got her Marisol and Jess. Santa even brought me an AGoT that looked like me for Christmas and we played together. Unfortunately, you never know how long you have to spend with your children. Now, AG is a great memory of our time together and I have replaced her dolls and continue to "play" with them in her memory. I don't regret a penny I spent on AG. Those memories are priceless to me.
