American Girl Mckenna

So am I "Mean Mommy"? DD6 has been begging for an AG doll since this time last year. Last year the budget wasn't there for one because she has a little brother also and a WDW trip was in the works for her birthday in January. She got a Journey Girl doll (TRU) for both Christmas and one for her birthday. Played with them some and now on any given day I normally find them lying around on the floor in her room. I can't justify paying that much $$ for a doll that won't get taken care of. Of course, everytime we get a catalog its sighing and whining for days. :scared:

I resisted AG for a looonngg time! I knew friends kids had them and I would throw away the catalogs before my DDs could see them. I thought they were rediculous!

I broke down and bought my oldest daughter her 1st at age 9. She was introduced to them through school of all places. They were reading an AG book in class. At that time, the other DD was 6 and she got a Target doll. She knew that if she took care of the Target doll, she would get a "real" one next. She was good with it, but the hair was a mess anyway! I went ahead and got her AG next time and she takes excellent care of all her dolls.

Only you know your kids. So, if you know they won't take care of them or they are not in the budget, that does not make you mean!

My kids knew they were expected to treat them well and I took the time to learn about how to take care of them (like not getting them wet and how to style their hair) and taught the girls the same. Also, we made sure they had a place to keep their dolls (not thrown in a bin with other toys). AG is better quality and we've not had the "hair problem" we had with the Target doll.

You are for sure not a mean Mommy:) And it is better to never start the obsession if you can help it!!! :rotfl:
Honestly though the are beautiful dolls and do hold their value very well! If you ever take the leap, if she doesnt like it aI am sure you will be able to get good money back out of it.
Happy Holidays!

I'm resisting as well. I just threw out the catalog a week ago before my DD7 could see it. We're in the midst of Barbies, Princesses , and Build a Bear. She has a Target doll that a neighbor gave us and hasn't played with it much lately.

Good thing you got her while you could because she is being retired at the end of this year.

My mom bought each of my girls an AG doll that looks like them for Christmas this year. I had 4 AG Dolls growing up (Kirsten, Molly, Felicity, and Samantha), and my mom has kept them at her house. My girls love playing with them when we go over there, so we know they will love having their own. I can't wait to see them with their dolls on Christmas Eve!

I didn't even know AG existed when I was a little girl. I had Cabbage Patch kids. The first time I took my first dd to AG in Chicago, I couldn't afford an AG. Well, I have 3 girls now, :scared: and we can afford AG now if we are conservative about it. We buy furniture from Target, and over the years, together, the girls have acquired a small collection of AG clothing and dolls for Christmas and birthdays.

My oldest has started trying to make Stop Motion movies with her dolls. It's really cute!

Anyway, right now they have Elizabeth, Molly, Emily, Julie, Marie Grace, Kit, Ruthie, and McKenna. I'm very impressed with how well all three of my girls care for their dolls. I've learned how to take very good care of AG doll hair and help them tidy their dolls up now and then.

I figure they can pass them on to their daughters some day, so it's a gift to my future granddaughters too! :thumbsup2

And if you want the truth, it's usually Daddy who caves and lets them get a new doll.... shhh.... don't tell him I said so! :rotfl:

Between my daughter and I, I have bought 4 AG dolls this year alone (McKenna, Rebecca, Caroline and Julie) and we got 4 of them last year as well (Addy, Kanani, Marie Grace and Cecile). My daughter had 2 before that (Felicity and Elizabeth).

My parents couldn't afford even one when I was younger so I think I am over compensating :rotfl:

I think Molly is on my list next and my daughter will probably want Saige (GOTY 2013). I think I will have to buy a house for the dolls alone ;)

As long as she still shows any interest in dolls, I say buy them for her. I technically stopped playing with my dolls in middle school, but still changed their clothes and stuff throughout highschool every once in a while, and I have to admit, I do still collect for them. My little step-cousins love AG dolls, and I love being able to play with them when they come over, since AG is something we have in common. My Samantha doll is 13 years old, and still in wonderful condition, despite all of the play she went through, and still gets from the little girls in the family :)

No, you're not mean. I got my DD a BFC Ink doll that sort of looks like her and I told her that she had to take excellent care of that doll before I even THOUGHT about getting her an AG doll. It has been a year and she has kept her word that she'd take care of her doll so I told DH that I want to take her to AG place for her 8th birthday this year so she could pick out a doll.

I bought an EEUC Kirsten doll (practically NIB aside from ruffled bangs) for $80 however DD wants Molly since she has glasses and has "curious eyes" just like her (her words, not mine. lol). I will continue to search for EEUC ones though to build up a collection and give her them for each holiday but for her very first one, I would love it if she had the experience to pick one :)

So I think if you check that List of Craigs in your area, you may find an AG doll that meets your budget down the road, makes your DD happy and then when she's older, you can send her to the AG doll hospital for restoration as a collectible :)

I really want Caroline Abbott for myself :rotfl: I keep hinting to DH. DD is still too young for them but I would love to be able to pass it on to her when she gets a little older

Don't feel bad, I've been saving my "allowance" so I can buy Saige for myself January 1st.

Or actually, maybe we should both feel silly. :p
