American Girl Dolls

Oh boy, this thread got me in trouble!!

I was just looking at the American Girl site, clicked on the Bitty Baby as I had not seen them before. Anyways, my 2 yr old DD saw it and is now clamoring for me to go back to the "babies." I knew she liked baby dolls, but wow!!! She is still saying "babies Mommy, babies!"

Well, maybe for Christmas......

My DD(just turned 9) has 6 of the dolls and most of the furniture, horse, dogs,.. they come with. She started getting them when she was 2 and she plays with them still. The dolls are in showcase condition. They occupy half of her play room with backgrounds,... There are children that take care of everything they have and there are those who don't give a d* about anything. She treat them the same way she treat her friends. Children copy behavior they see around them.

I wish DD liked AG dolls! She is 5 y/o and only plays with stuffed animals. I did buy her a Bitty Baby two years ago and she could care less about it. When in NYC a few months ago I went to the AG store and WOW what a place! I ended up buying DD the entire Angelina collection since I knew she liked stuffed animals. Poor Angelina sits in the corner of her bedroom and has only been played with when first brought home. I would love to buy her all the dolls and adorable accessories.

These dolls are a real sore point for me in my husband's family.

My 10 and 7 YO niece are obsessed with these, and now want one for any occasion (ie, birthday, christmas, etc). These dolls cost around $100 not to mention all of the accessories and there's no way i'm spending that kind of money on dolls that these girls play with and trash. It may be different if they collect them, but I did not have $100 dolls, I had $2 barbies growing up.

My husband gets so mad at his mom because she buys the girls these dolls and 10 minutes later the hair is pulled out of the bows....and what makes it worse is that my SIL and BIL live on close to nothing and have holes in their shoes.

Talk about priorities out of whack. I refuse to buy any of this overpriced stuff.

Sorry, vent over - off soapbox.

Oh, I was waiting for someone to say how much they cost. Why? Because we are on a DISNEY forum, and I can't think of anything much more expensive than Disney.

My DD6 has had dolls since she was 3. Of the baby dolls she has, the Bitty Baby is the one that has been most loved and the one that is the best put together. I paid $38 for the doll. When compared to dolls you can buy in Target, it's not too bad. The company stands behind their product.

Now, as far as the bigger dolls, they are expensive, but again a very nice quality doll. The company stands behind their dolls. And, if my girls outgrow the stuff (which I will never sell the dolls, but maybe the stuff that goes with it), I can sell it on ebay and get so much more than what I paid for it. I have one outfit right now that is retired that we've had for a couple years, and it is going for around $75. And, the dolls, regardless of condition, go for quite a bit of money.

It is a shame, Hillbeans, when people appear to not have their priorities straight= expensive dolls instead of shoes for the family.

My niece is now 14 & for years my sis and I would either go in on a doll outfit or accessory for her (sis being the expert!) or we'd each give her a GC to AG to spend how she wanted. They appear to be quality dolls. There are several "crafter's galleries" around here that sell homemade clothes for the dolls. Def less expensive than the catalogue stuff (& unique!)

i have american girl doll kirsten and molly and ameirican girl doll of today

I had never heard of these until I joined these boards. :)

Would the Bitty Baby be good for a 3 year old to play with? I am thinking of getting one for DD for Christmas. She has really started carrying around and playing with babies a lot more lately.

Thanks! :)

i got molly when i was in third grade.. wow almost 9 years ago!!! i loved her to pieces and had one outfit for her and then when i was 12 my mom took me to the agp in chicago for my bday we didnt do the party we just shopped and i got some things for her there. i read every one of the books that were available for every doll and loved it. i will so buy my kids american girl dolls..in about fifteen years ;)
i would have killed for more than one and more things for her but we could barely afford one so i was lucky.

We love American Dolls. My oldest DD at 12 had bitty baby and loved her from four on. When she could read the books (2nd grade) I told her she could choose her fave. Molly was under the tree that year and was very loved. A year later she recieved Kit for a birthday gift and it was overload. She just didn't look at them as special anymore. We did make a trip to the store in Chicago and she knew going in what she could choose from. Her eves were huge, not at the selection, but at the girls her age (8) and older, who were crying their eyes out. Now DD (4) has the twins but she's done for dolls until she can read the stories and choose her 1 special doll. One loved doll is better than twenty don'tcareabouts. Accessories are my outlet now :)

I think bitty baby (possibly the twins as equally) has been the most played with for my dd's. We only have one baby, but 3 of the AG dolls. They both still play with bitty baby. I do look at the AG dolls as keepsakes as well. My girls didn't play with any other baby dolls, so I think these are the best of the best.

I'll never forget when I first saw them on the Oprah show and I laughed at the thought of spending $80 for a doll. It was years later when I found myself buying one for my dd. Oh well, things change. There's definitely something to be said for quality.

I LOVE the American Girls! I first discovered them when I came across the books at the library when I was 8 years old. I got Samantha for my 9th birthday, and I've gotten items for them for every birthday and Hannukah since. I own 6 of the dolls, and they probably have at least as much clothes as I do. I'll be 23 in October, and guess what's going on the top of my wishlist? Nellie! I never grew out of them. My mom owns 3 of the dolls herself.

According to my mom, my grandmother showed her one of the catalogues before I discovered them myself, and mom opted not to show me because of the prices....famous last words, eh? hehe.

There's a whole online community of mostly 20 something fans known as the Society of American Girl collectors. It was started by a girl my age who grew up with them as I did.

DD has Kit. The year they came out with her was the year we were buying her one. At the time, Hunter's hair was cute like Kit's so it was almost like she received a "My Twin Doll".
She also has bitty baby who DD will still play with from time to time. I think BB was her favorite.

I, myself, who like Addy.:)

I think a Bitty Baby is the perfect gift for a three year old. They are really, really wonderful dolls. I've gotten the starter sets for both girls. They love packing the wicker suitcase to take with them.

I have boys, so these dolls don't interest me, but I did find out that The Pleasant Company will donate to charitable organizations every 2 or 3 years. You can choose between a doll, lunch at the company place, boxed library set, or other things.

If any of you are PTO/PTA - this is a great fund raiser item!

I looked up the corp. headquarters number, called and spoke to their fundraising person, she sent some info they required, and I got the item shortly after that.

My 7 yo has Kailey and Bitty

My 4 yo has Bitty and the twins

We did the American Girl Place in NYC for lunch and had a blast.
We are going back in August for the 4 yo birthday.

As a matter of fact, Kailey just suffered a broken leg over the weekend and it was quite a scare ;) Luckily we were able to find an authorized AG doll doctor and she is now all better. It was touch and go for awhile.

My 7 yo is saving her money for Kit.

I love the idea of having your daughter read the books first in order to earn a doll and make her selection based on the sotries. I wish I had thought to do that. I have a shelf of mostly unread AG books.
