You have all done a great job letting me know about the AGD's and the quality. I am convinced it is a good thing. Also asked some moms locally and all have them and have Bday parties with them. So we are in.

Not so fast all of you know it alls I need a lot more info.

What is needed for the doll so my $$$ are not for nothing?
I heard you need the special brush? Is that right?
What else do I need to know?

Can the doll go in the pool we will be heading to Florida in Feb. for 16 days and we are big swimmers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any information will be great. Thank you all for the good advice. Happy shopping.

Get the brush for sure. Extra outfits are fun. No, I would not take this doll into the pool.

The doll will come with an outfit and I believe a paperback book. Everything else is extra, and is limited by your budget and your child's particular favorites. There is a hair care kit and a doll care kit that we eventually ended up with. I might start with just the hairbrush, though. And I'd have a lesson with your daughter before you let her brush on her own - once mine brushed too hard and the brush came apart, so practice a few times showing her how to use it gently.

A set of extra hairbows, socks and shoes came in handy over time - again, you can add them later, or they are great for stocking stuffers. We never had any trouble keeping up with the clothes, but the little things sometimes go missing. My daughter really enjoyed hanging the clothes up, so I got an extra pack of the hangers and she loved those!!!

We added a bed in the first or second year, and ultimately ended up with both Samantha's bed and the set of bunk beds. My daughter also loved the animal stuff, so we got some of the dog stuff one year.

I'd say set yourself a budget and add a few outfits or accessories at a time. You are going to have a lot of Christmases and birthdays before she grows out of the AG stage!!! It's also possible that she might want to earn some of her own money occasionally to buy extra things. She'll decide some of that based on what her friends have as she gets older - they like to be able to play together.

Have fun shopping!!!

Edited to add - No, definitely not in the pool!!!!

NO POOL !!!!! The body is cloth.

I would start with the doll and a set of pajamas and a change of clothes. A bed is nice but here is where you can save some money at least until your DD learns what she really wants. Buy a bed from Target, Hobby Lobby, Michael's or Shopko (if you have them) in other words get a generic bed for the first gift then she has a bed for her doll and time to decide which of the much more expensive one she wants. This is what I did with my DD we bought a generic brass bed like Samantha's for under 20 dollars for that first expensive Christmas and then at another Christmas she got a real AG bed. She still used the generic one though. Put the word out to Gr.Ma and Aunts it makes it very easy for them to buy gifts or give her a gift card.

Craft fairs are a great place to find home made AG girl clothes and sometimes furniture.

Great advice please keep it coming.

Had no idea the body was soft.

I def. will not let my daughter put it in the pool.

You get a cheap doll bed from Target if you don't want to spend alot on and AG one. My DD loves the trundle bed from American girl though. A brush is a must and PJ"S for the doll would be nice too. Target also has doll Stylin chairs that you set your doll in to do their hair. DD loves doing their hair. WE just ordered the Doll tote and the treat seat(clamps onto any table so doll can sit with you) from AG today. My DD also likes the matching outfits but that is kind of expensive, so I bought her matching PJ's for her and the Emily doll. I don't know which doll you were looking at ordering but the 'just like you dolls" have a deal if you wanted to get Coconut the dog. Alot of little girls love coconut. You can even buy him a doghouse. Just wanted to give you a few more ideas.

Ebay is great for finding cute handmade outfits!
Also if your a sams club member they sometimes get the american girl hair brush and how to book!

when she does brush the hair. we found it works best if ya lightly spritz it with water first!

When you spritz the hair cover the dolls eyes as they can rust.

You all convinced me and I just did it. My daughter will be getting her first AGD this xmas. With your advice on the hair brush.

I will be starting to see what else is out there to go along with her. My daughters Bday is Jan so I might as well take advantage of the sales after the holidays I am hoping.

I do have to be honest I don't think I will be spending on outfits the amount that they are asking for a doll outfit. Way to cheap but I have found a craft store locally that sells hand mare cloths for more then have so I think that is what she will be wearing in the future.

Thanks again for all your help. I am sure that she will have a wonderful xmas and enjoy her doll ver much.

:thumbsup2
This is a wonderful toy. Do not hesitate, it will last forever. The clothes, furniture and accessories are well made too. The books are amazing.
Do shop craft shows and stash things. You may want to purchase a chest (Michaels) for this purpose. Getting my dd 10, Felicity's furniture and more dresses from Santa. Buying my dd 6 Samantha doll and her bed. Picked up some pj's at a craft show, along with a desk that I still need to paint.

Your daughter will love the doll. Be aware she will go in and out of playing with it like any toy. My daughter is suddenly playing with hers again constantly. AG goes everywhere with us. Definately check out ebay for clothes. Many of the clothes are not homemade but from non-AG companies but fit AG. I just got a 3 pc outfit, embroidered jean jacket, embroidered jeans and matching tshirt for $13.00. I found that often at craft shows they had cloths but not shoes, socks etc. If you buy from the same seller they will very often combine shipping.
