I suspect there is always some level of standby crew needed to run AA under normal circumstances due to how lean most airlines run. That doesn't mean that a system error hasn't taxed their ability to fill openings with standby crew beyond their ability to cover all flights. At the end of the day they are limited on exactly how many crew can be used because of regulations about amount of time in the air. They may have someone sitting at home willing to take a flight that has maxed out their hours for a given time frame.
I think the end result will be less of a problem then originally speculated but still some cancelled and delayed flights beyond the industry norm. That is an educated guess.
