Amber Alert - Somer Thompson N FL.....UPDATE

Thank you for posting this - that poor child. I'll certainly keep her in my prayers tonight.

My heart breaks everytime I see one of these Amber Alerts! She will be in my prayers!

I really hope this doesn't turn out the way I think it is going to turn out. They waited 2 1/2 hours to call police!!! :confused3

Prayers being said.

Perhaps this will be a shame on me but I saw the mom on tv this morning and even though she acted hysterical, there were very, very few tears. Hoping that I'm wrong.

Thank you lillygator, for posting the update...how tragic and senseless, I'm physically sick to my stomach hearing this news :sad2:

Which channel--I saw her on CBS and at one point she was about to explode in tears (she let out a mini-wail of a cry) and it seemed to me she was doing her best to keep composure while trying to find her daughter.

The same interview was on all of the channels. I don't know which channel she was on but I was watching the news. She's dabbing her eyes but there weren't any tears- maybe she was cried out.

I haven't seen the video of the mother yet, but I'll watch it. If she's what I call a "dry crier" then she's very suspect, IMHO. The dry criers can't be trusted as far as you can throw them. They're the ones who SOUND as if they're crying, scrunch their face up as if they're crying, dab at their eyes as if tears were flowing.......Yet a tear never comes out. They can't force one to flow. I liken them to bad soap opera actresses.

Now if she's not crying, it may just be because (as someone said) she's all cried out. Are her eyes puffy and bloodshot, like someone who has bawled their eyes out? Because you can reach a point where you have no more tears......But people can tell you WERE crying at some point. Those people can be differentiated from the dry criers.

I swear, this never fails. It's not that "not crying" means you're guilty. It's the dry crying that screams you did it. The act of trying to make it seem as if you're crying by manipulating your voice, facial expression, dabbing at nonexistent tears......but no tears appear. They'd be better off to just attempt to look shell-shocked.

Why, why, why do these poor kids keep ending up dead? :headache:

Oh no. I read the update and it made me want to cry.

Assuming that the story we're being told is accurate--in my heart I know this was an incredibly rare thing (a stranger abduction on the way home from school) but it certainly does make me think twice about letting my kids walk home from school. This family even did the "safety in numbers" thing that I consider my safeguard against things happening...but how can you be sure a young child won't run ahead or lag behind?
I suppose you just have to play the odds and realize these things happen very rarely. Or else you would never let your child out of your sight!

The dry crying reminds me of the mom from a while ago who went on the news and "dry cried". The father was noticebly more upset and the mother's plea was incredibly eery. It turns it she wound up murdering her own children. Absolutely terrible. :sad2:

DFiance is training in the Police Academy now and they are told that dry cryers are usually the first suspect.

I sincerly hope that the mother did not kill this sweet girl and Somer is in my prayers. Poor, poor girl. :sad1:

I'm a protective freak and I admit it. :scared1: A few years ago, a young relative of mine was kidnapped from a public place in broad daylight with people all around. It seems anyone who saw/heard the child kicking and screaming as she was being carried away simply thought it was a kid who didn't want to leave the "event." :headache: Miracles happen, because she was returned unharmed, but the kidnapper was never caught. Who knows if they did it again? The police suspected it was their first attempt and they lost their nerve. My fear is they got better at it the next time.

It hit too close to home. Every time I walk by the area in Walmart that show the pics of missing kids, I think of how easily we could be seeing her age-progressed picture on that wall. Yes, it scared the crap out of me. So I do watch out for DD more than a lot of parents. Can't help it......

I've never read the studies on it, and they never taught it in law school, but it's just something I've observed over the years as I've followed criminal cases. It is uncanny how accurately you can peg a dry crier as being culpable. That's why you can't go by the audio alone.....You have to look at the total circumstances. Now even DH looks at the TV and says, "Oh no.....A dry crier!"

Actually, in one of my classes in college- Marriage and Family- we read a study about the woman who I was referring to earlier. After the mother had been proven guilty, researchers went to a University and asked 2 groups of students to either 1. Listen to the Audio of her speech or 2. Watch the speech.

The students who listened thought that she was truly upset/devestated, etc. Those students who watched the video said something felt off.

Very interesting stuff..

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack and take away from this horrible new update about Somer. :guilty:

At the 6 pm press conference the sheriff said that the body is most likely Somer Thompson.

The mother doesn't seem suspect to me at all and I really do find it sad that people are judging her grief (or lack there of.)

From CNN he says it is a white female, and then says we cannot say the sex?

Body of small child found in Georgia landfill, authorities say
Posted: 05:16 PM ET
(CNN) - Police looking for a missing 7-year-old Florida girl said Wednesday they have found the body of a small child in a landfill in south Georgia, about an hour from the girl's home.

"We do not have a positive ID at this time," Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler told reporters. "The body was partially covered. All that we can see at this time are the lower extremities, but it is a white female or a white child. We cannot say the sex."

The landfill is located near Folkston, Georgia, 55 miles north of where Somer Thompson became separated from her schoolmates on her way home from school in Orange Park, Florida, on Monday. The girl has not been seen since.

Members of the FBI's forensic crimes unit were en route to the landfill to process the crime scene, Beseler said.

The missing girl's parents have been alerted to the find, he added. "We hope and pray that it's not the body of Somer, but the garbage that was brought into that area ... was collected in the Orange Park area."

The medical examiner's office in Georgia will conduct an autopsy, he said.

Wasn't she at work, she called home and the kids told her she didn't make it home? I dont understand why anyone would think she was a part of this if she was at work all day? and if she wasn't why would the cops waste their time interviewing sex offenders?

Even mothers of DEAD children cannot get a break on the DIS - DISGUSTING!
