Amazon to increase Prime Membership fee to 119

My family uses the unlimited photo storage in the "Family Vault" great way to back up and store photos and we share our Disney vacation photos as there are 3 of us taking pictures on our phones and camera.
along with the videos, music.

also nice that I can use the credit card rewards from my Chase Freedom and Discover cards.

I forgot about the photo storage perk. My apple cloud is full and I'm not paying more so I guess I can start using Amazon.

Question for you guys that have kid's with student Prime, can we set up the account with dd's school email and then change it over to mine, or does the account have to stay in her name/email?
She got the free student trial but since I already have prime (and she's still at home) I just order her stuff for her. Next fall she will be away at school and I was thinking she should have prime but I don't want to pay her student rate plus my regular one.

my daughter's is too.

both of my grand daughter's have iPads now so I invited them to share the storage as well as my son in law.

I had not even noticed this benefit until my SIL saw it on one of his deals site and asked it I could invite them to the Family Vault.

Ok, I'm going to need to help to figure this out. DH and I each have Prime accounts and I'm trying to remember why. I think it was because they won't allow multiple PCs to use the music or something? Anyhow, now that the price is going up, I may only want to have 1 prime account, so what are the downsides to this?
1) So for music, one of us will lose our library.
2) We have multiple fire sticks, so any of those on the non-renewed account will need to be re-set to the other account. Is there a limit to how many fire sticks can be on 1 account?

This will be a huge hassle because mine is the primary account for everything, but DH doesn't want to lose his music.
What else do we need to think about?

Jeff Bezos personal wealth does not reflect Amazon's profit (or losses) on Prime memberships.
Ok well on feb 1, 2018 amazon reported its highest quarterly earnings ever: 2 billion dollars. And he is the richest man **in the world**

Too bad he is losing all that money on prime memberships.

I let my Prime membership lapse this past January, and I'm surviving just fine. I haven't placed any orders since I dropped it - I've found the same price or better for everything I needed somewhere else with free shipping. In the few cases where I need something in the next day or two, I just get my you-know-what off the sofa and go buy it at a store. But really, how often do you NEED something that fast? I've found it's pretty rare, and usually I can wait a few more days.

If I were to give up Prime my UPS driver would be out of a job. :rotfl2:

I live in a very large city with many resources and no doubt could find what I need...eventually. But what usually happens is I go store to store hunting for something, sometimes for days and end up ordering it on Amazon when I can’t find it or would have to drive across town (many miles and a couple hours out of my day with traffic) to get it. Cutting out the middle man and getting rid of that hassle is well worth an extra $20 to me. I use Prime Photo even though it’s layout/implementation is terrible, occasionally get a free book or use Prime Music once in awhile. DH uses
Prime Video quite often but even without those “extras” I would still pay for it.

I have to say Target and Walmart have stepped it up with their shipping game. With Target shipping is free with my RedCard and Walmart I think it’s over $35. I’ve had both show up the next day and occasionally have had them show up that day. But when it comes to things that aren’t usually everyday items they just can’t compete.

The extra $20 is worth it for me so that I don't have to get myself out of the house to go get/find it. I hate the traffic here, and I really don't like shopping.
While I may not need everything in 2 days, there are things I need by a certain day and since I know I will get it by then it is worth it. Plus I have purchased quite a few things that I can't get at Target or Walmart online over the last year, or get locally that would be expensive to ship from other places. Sometimes I am really surprised at the things that come with Prime shipping, like big heavy items.
Since I do alot of that kind of shopping it makes sense to pay for the service through Prime.
I'm not happy about the increase but it is what it is and I will pay it until there is something out there that compares with Amazon equally.

My health often precludes me from jumping up and going shopping. That is why I use Amazon, especially Amazon Prime.

But it's not an "extra $20"- it's $119. Like I said, almost everything I've been able to find somewhere else online, at the same or better price, with free shipping or even with paying shipping.

I honestly remember only one case where I wanted something faster than it would get here if I bought it online - a wrist brace. A quick trip to Walmart solved that problem. Getting that one thing delivered to my door instead of running to the store isn't worth $119 to me.

But to each his own!

I have ordered a few things lately from other online retailers. Both took WELL over a week to arrive. I don't have that kind of patience, LOL. One item was a grill accessory for my gas Weber grill from Lowes.com. I used Lowes because they do a 10% military discount. The item was $39.99. Well, I should have checked Amazon first...it was $20.99 and free 2 day shippping. Now I have to make a trip to Lowes to return the part I got from them. Annoying. I ordered the part from Amazon and had it long before the Lowes order arrived.

I have also begun buying a LOT of things on Amazon that I used to buy in drug stores because the prices are far lower through Amazon. I recently needed a new heated neck wrap. $12.99 at Walgreens. $7.94 on Amazon. No brainer.

Amazon’s prices used to be cheaper but now almost always Walmart.com is cheaper, and it doesn’t take much to get to $35 for free shipping. I get my orders usually in two or three days and they’ve even started carrying a lot of organic and natural cleaning products at the best price available. I still occasionally get books and oddball items from Amazon but I don’t need prime for that.

It’s $119 for an entire year, less than $10 a month for unlimited 2 day sometimes 1 day and/or 2 hour delivery. Plus unlimited photo storage, a free book a month, music, movies and TV shows as well as Prime Member prices/sales on things. Not to mention stellar customer service. I could go to Walmart (and I sometimes do) but having the luxury of not having to is well worth less than $10 a month for me.

Definitely, $119 a year to not have to go to Walmart- totally worth it.
I live in a pretty populated area, traffic is a nightmare, and Walmart is like a horror movie. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime.

My area the traffic isn’t too bad but if you don’t get to Walmart early and get out by 9am the risk of becoming homicidal is alarmingly high.

Nope, I will never get prime. They infuriated me. I placed an order for a few items as I don't get out much. So i used the free shipping as I bought a few items to get the free shipping.
Then I started getting these notices for my prime this and prime that. I never even said I would try prime as I don't order enough. It was that my husband was working so much so it seemed to work. Then they charged me for it with out my knowledge. I called them up and gave them a piece of my mind. They are suppose to refund my money. I don't trust them..

Still a better deal than a Costco or Sam's membership, which only gets you into their stores - you still have to drive there and home yourself.

Oh yeah. I'm not knocking them at all. I love my Costco membership. Just pointing out that $120 for a year of free shipping, plus access to many products and features, is not too bad of a deal compared to other clubs.

I'm going to guess you're not fully utilizing your Costco membership then.

When you say it "only gets you into their stores - you still have to drive there and home yourself." you're not actually correct. As a Costco member I have access to travel deals including rental car deals. I do also have the ability to order online with no shipping costs on a variety of items.

But I would also point out that Costco and Sam's Club are bulk warehouse companies. They are not the same type of company as Amazon. The similarity is that both have a fee and an individual may or may not feel for either platforms that the fee is worth it to them.

I'm not particularly happy about the increase, which I would deem significant, but I also had been feeling like it was only a matter of time.

Amazon has been seriously dabbling in a lot of things compared to when I first joined back in 2009 (I've been a Prime Member since the last year it was $79). They have a lot of original content, just like Amazon is doing, they have free same-day shipping on a select items, they have the 'lockers' that allow you to schedule a pick up, they have branched out into more ways to get items to you (like Amazon logistics), etc.

All that being said---my membership actually renews June 9th so we'll get 1 more year at the old price. I am hoping they keep the new price for a time and not become a yearly increase type deal because at that point my mind will have to start doing more weighing of pros and cons.

Exactly.

Unless I need something right now, I order it from Amazon.

For me, not having to go to the store, especially Wal-Mart, is well worth $10 a month.

And it isn't for one thing. It is for numerous things throughout the year.
