Amazon kindle help

DS18 won one at his company holiday party last night.

Can you only buy/download books from amazon.com or can you use other sites as well such as borders?

Amazon mostly, there are some smaller genre specific retailers who sell DRM-free titles

Baen (Science Fiction)
MyBookstoreandMore (romance, erotica ... maybe not your son?)
Fictionwise (mulit-format books)

There are some others

He can buy from Borders and others if he learns how to take off DRM and convert the files. I'd suggest he visit http://www.mobileread.com and read up from the extremely knowledgeable people there on all the tips and tricks.

The books need to be in the AWZ format read by Kindle unless you get into stripping DRM which has legal issues.....

Amazon is normally the easiest route - there are other sites as well - I highly recommend kindleboards website for lots of great info.

Its really hard to compare the Kindle and the NookColor

The Kindle is an eInk device and the NookColor is an LCD color screen. Its like comparing a sedan to a pick-up truck. Which one is better for you depends on what you want to use it for, but they'll both drive you up to the grocery store just fine.

I want to read books and post stuff to twitter and facebook maybe listen to music?

The Kindle and the Nookcolor are what I have been looking at.

e-ink is better for long term reading (30+ minutes) and LCD screens are better for surfing the web and playing with apps. So it just depends on what you plan on doing the most.
