So, we decided to buy my dad a new TV for a combo bday/Christmas/retirement gift. Found one on Amazon. They delivered it Saturday to my sister's house. Left it ON HER FRONT PORCH, with the picture of the TV and "42 INCH" for the world to see.

My sis lives in a decent neighborhood, but there are a LOT of rentals now...I am SHOCKED it was still there.

Today, Amazon also left her new video camera outside. Seriously...beware!

Hmmm .... I thought that Amazon's TV delivery service included free set-up so I wonder why they just left it on the porch.

In any case, leaving things on porches is not limited to Amazon. It happens with any "mail order" service. I guess if you don't want things left on the porch then you need to make sure someone is home or deliver it to work.

When we got our TV from Amazon, it was shipped to a local delivery service, who contacted me to arrange for a time that someone would be home to accept it. They set it all up, turned it on and let me verify it worked fine and wasn't damaged in any way, and had me sign for it.

That's not Amazon. That's the carrier. We've complained to UPS several times about just leaving things by the door. DH is a SAHD so he's generally home during the day. How hard would it be to press the frickin' doorbell before running off? At least our complaints have gotten them to start putting packages in plastic when it's raining. It's slight improvement.

When our packages arrive USPS, they're put in our mailbox when they fit but when they don't, our carrier brings it to the door and rings the bell to hand it to us. MUCH better.

Yikes, that isn't good. I'm glad they weren't stolen. We've been lucky so far. When FedEx brings our packages from Amazon they ring the bell and if we don't answer they do leave them on the porch but they hide them enough so that they aren't visible from the street. (The UPS guy, on the other hand, seems to just toss things at the porch and then runs away!) I think (though I'm not sure) that Amazon uses different companies for their shipping depending on the option that the customer chooses. If that's the case then maybe your family could just choose a different option next time and hope that whoever delivers the package will be more discrete with it. Or if there's an option that requires a signature upon delivery, then that might be best. I don't know if that is available, but if it isn't it ought to be.

Not to sound negative but why weren’t they home if they knew when it was being delivered? I order all the time from amazon.com and I know exactly when items are to be delivered. Most expensive item I’ve order was about $300 and I took a sick day to be home to receive it…and I live in one of the better areas.

My parents ordered a new Dyson vacuum for me a few years ago from Target, for Christmas.... They had gone out of town when it was to be delivered.. I went over to check their mail and could CLEARLY see, from the street, that it was a dyson vacuum. It was in the original box, sitting right in front of her door. She has shrubs, it could have easily been sat behind.

It is wrong to blame amazon THEY aren't delivering it! It is whatever delivery service is being used, whether it is UPS, Fed EX or any of the others. When you order something you can always pay extra to have a signature required which means they won't leave it on the porch. So instead of griping pay for the service you want. I don't mind them leaving it on the porch and don't want to pay extra. You obviously want the extra service so pay for it. I also make sure I"m home or someone is if a very expensive article is being delivered.

FWIW, I have had the same problem when ordering from Harry and David's. I had fresh fruit delivered in sub-zero weather to two friends and they were left on their porches. Both UPS and FedEx did it. I had both baskets redelivered with the same results. So ... this year I only had baskets delivered to people who lived (1) where it was warm, (2) lived in apartments or (3) who were home all day. I'll make my own baskets for my friends this year and save some money.

I've had some packages stolen, so I now have a note on my front door telling all delivery people to leave the items in a secure location I identify in the note, or to not leave the package and just leave a slip so I can arrange to pick it up. They've been pretty good about following the directions.

On those rare occassions when I am home and expecting a package, I leave a big old' sign on the door basically saying "I'm home- you need to knock!!" So far they've followed that instruction too!

So my best advice is to let your shipper know what they should do with packages - don't expect them to be able to read your mind. They are in a darned if they do, darned if they don't situation - some folks will get upset if they don't deliver, some will if they do! If you are not comfortable with leaving a note out, call the shipper and try to get a note put on the shipment.

Amazon is also FABULOUS about resending items that are not received due to theft. You need to follow the proper steps of calling the shipper and asking them to come out and see if they can locate the item (in case they just hid it in a bush or something you weren't expecting), but once the shipper says they can't locate it, Amazon will reship things almost immediately. They even upgraded a reshipment I needed to 1 day shipping!

Awesome stereotyping- I hope you are teaching your children better than yourself.

It's not Amazon - it's the carrier, not sure why you're blaming them.

(but then again, what do I know, I am one of those questionable apartment: dwellers that are infesting your sister's formerly nice neighborhood)

The bolded is actually appauling. So what only those living in rentals steal packages?? I'm sorry but the only one you can blame is the delivery company and just because someone rents does not make them bad.

I actually have an opposite problem with the fact that the delivery companies will not leave my packages if I am not home. It stinks having to chase down the UPS driver to get my package as there are no local pickup places for UPS like there is for Fedex here.

Our carrier leaves things on the porch but usually it's just smalll stuff like dvd's and games and he drapes the doormat over the item. He rings the doorbell too but doesn't wait to see if anyone answers.

As others have pointed out, this has nothing to do with Amazon. You have to contact UPS or FedEx and tell them your preferences for deliveries.

If it makes you feel any better those renters probably came from a better neighborhood where they once owned a house...

UPS used to leave items under my covered porch. I guess they got lazy and now leave the items on the driveway even in the rain. The USPS never does that.

Wow, to get to my front door, you have to walk up the driveway, turn right and walk between two (about chest high) shrubs, turn left again and walk up a small walkway to my small but deep covered porch. There is no way anyone can see onto my front porch from the street because of the shrubs and anything on the porch will stay dry even in pouring down rain. UPS as well as USPS always get out of their trucks and places any items right against my door. I guess we're lucky to have such nice drivers. Although they do run away as soon as they ring the doorbell.:rotfl: We've been close to the door and call out we'll open the door for them, but they hear my large akita right at the front door growling, barking and trying to get out at them and always yell they'll just leave the pkgs.:rotfl: For some reason they always refuse to allow us to open the door to receive a pkg. My dog really, really wants to meet them, but they're shy of him for some reason.:upsidedow
