Amazon.com

Saw that today. Has Amazon done anything similar with any other website/product type?

I was starting to not trust Phil's reviews much anymore. They just seem sporadic and inconsistent from one to the next. Now that the site is going to have a profit motive, you can count me out from looking there anymore.

My favorite lately has been DCResource.

The forums over there are always good. Sometimes they are better than the reviews.

I also like the forums, mostly. Those lens forums can get real ugly when folks start fighting about which lens is better or putting someone down because they like a cheaper lens.

This forum is a lot less technical (too bad because I like technical) but it's way more friendly.

I don't care for the forums there, and there have also allegedly been arbitrary bannings of users. Even if that were not the case - could they possibly have a worse piece of forum software? Narrow, ugly, etc. I do occasionally hang out on the forums at Steve's Digicams, they are probably not quite as busy, but busy enough, and the tone is much less combative.

I also haven't been caring for the rest of the site so much any more. It does seem like he's been grooming it for a take-over, trying to max out on information, even if it's difficult to find and not always clearly marked (ie, press releases.) An example of difficult-to-find things is the page that has actual mm readings for various sensors - I've only ever been able to find it via a Google search, not by navigating the menus.

I think Amazon has bought sites like this before but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head.

Yikes!

Have you contacted amazon directly to see what they will do to help you - especially since they were the one you went through.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Wow. If I'd seen that I might have jumped on it too, telling that little voice to "go away--it's Amazon--really, it'll work out." Sorry, I don't have any advice other than to follow up w/ Amazon if you don't receive it. I've had nothing but positive experiences with them, but I've never had one of their retailers disappear on me.

Keep us posted. If it does ship, I want one! :lmao:

Awhile back I noticed Amazon listed different sellers with different prices, and one of the sellers had a not-too-great rating on resellerratings.com. I hope Amazon is not getting involved with shady resellers.

I have never had any problems buying from Amazon or their resellers. I would think they want to keep their good name and would resolve any issues. It wouldn't take long to lose a lot of business if forums like this start posting bad reviews.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I recently bought my son a SD card on amazon. I too have bought from amazon over the years and thought no problem. Oh big problem when i wanted to send it back as it did not work in his phone (or whatever gadget he got it for) as I was NOT dealing with amazon then and due to that easy one click bit, really didn't pay much attention. Fortunately for me, I was able to use this SD care in my palm so nothing lost, paid my son for it and bought one directly from a reputable dealer.

Anyone can sell on amazon. I think they only pull them if they have alot of problems that get reported.
I had a problem once, and I had to wait a certain amount of time. my item was shipped, but never arrived. I contacted the seller clsoe to the end of the time frame and they told me to wait a few more day. After that, they didn't respond to my emails, so I contacted amazon, and then I had to wait a certain amount of time as well. Then amazon contacted the seller to give tehm one last chance. I heard from the seller imediately after that and was refunded.

I think Amazon is probably about as reliable as any online retailer... but I am a little wary when buying from any "Amazon Marketplace" sellers. But Amazon themselves are top-notch, though really slow when you get free shipping. I love that they shrink-wrap the books now... I'll sometimes buy basic books from buy.com to save a couple bucks, but books that I want to keep nice and not have potentially damaged dust covers (like the Peanuts complete collections) I'll order from Amazon.

I'm glad that you were able to get it sorted pretty easily!

i have purchased from amazon third-party sellers in the past but much prefer to buy from amazon directly. even when direct from amazon costs a bit more. it is usually worth it to me to know i'm dealing with a company i trust.

I think I have only bought from amazon itself once. The rest I usually go with the chepaest price. And the only time I had a problem was the one I mentioned above. I think most of amazon sellers are good. Like I siad, if they get complaints, they pull them, and I trust them more than ebay.

If I were you I would also call Amex and explain the situation to them. They can make sure the charge does not go through.

When I had issues with the sensor cleaning nightmare we called the cc company and explained it to them - they REVERSED the charge - getting us our money back - and said they would personally deal with the retailer if they tried to fight it. They didn't.

Good luck.
