Amazon announces Kindle Owners Lending Library for Prime Members

so glad I have it pre-ordered now. My DD #1 will be so excited on Xmas! I conveniently told her about how cool it was and now she's hoping to get one! :thumbsup2

Sounds great, but one problem--MIL, FIL and me all share 1 Kindle/Prime account. While we can all read the same borrowed book, it is a shame that we all can only have 1 borrowed title per month. I guess we can take turns, lol. Just to note, you can only read these titles on actual Kindle devices, not apps so no reading on the Ipad.

I'm not excited about the one book a month limit. Sometimes that would work out great, but when I have time I can go through a stack in a month.

Well I guess I see this as a bonus gift, Amazon doesn't have to do this at all so I think letting us borrow 1 book a month that we would normally have to buy to read, as generous. If I wanted to borrow more, I'd get on the wait list for the library. I typically take a month to read a book so I think its a perfect "limit".

I agree. Amazon is in the business of selling things. For them to "lend" anything is a bonus. They've been doing a lot to lure customers into buying their Amazon Prime memberships. Free shipping, streaming video, music downloads and now a lending "library".

It may not provide me with as much free reading as I would like in a month, but that's why I have a library card and I always have holds placed for the books I want to read.

Sounds wonderful except for the price, $79 per year is kinda steap to only BORROW a book, no?

The point of a Kindle is not just to borrow books. :confused3

However, the $79 per year for Prime membership divided by 12 months makes the cost of borrowing a book a month $6.58. That's cheaper than buying a paperback or hardcover or a Kindle edition of a best seller. So actually, it is not steep at all.

There are many thousands of free books and low cost books as well which you can load to your Kindle and keep forever.

Me too. I have a Prime Membership for free two day shipping. I use it all the time! I think it's really cool that they keep adding benefits to the membership I already have. Seems it usually goes the other way. :headache:

The $79 covers more than the kindle lending library. It also covers unlimited streaming video (think Netflix) and unlimited free shipping.

I order a lot of stuff from Amazon. I send snacks and groceries to my boys at college. It's cheaper than shipping it myself and I prefer to do that instead of sending them cash that they might choose to blow on beer.

I can watch streaming video on my computer or hook the computer up to my tv. Their selection of free movies is almost as good as Netflix. And they also have paid on demand video as well.

The price tag may not fit into everyone's budget. But it work for me.

Prime is $79 a year for free 2 day shipping on purchases. The borrowing of a book is just an extra perk of the membership, along with the free video streaming.

I picked up a book this morning - it is pretty cool. I've had Prime for a long time - mostly for the free two day shipping. But the video streaming and now this are really nice add-ons.

Very cool perk for them to add!

I've had Prime for a few years now anyway, bought only for the free shipping (I do probably 90% of my Christmas/birthday shopping on Amazon).

And this is just another perk to having the membership... will be very nice to be able to start borrowing the books that I haven't gotten around to buying/getting through library yet.

I guess some may feel its worth the cost. I have an iphone and a mac, so I will only use my Kindle for books, and I NEVER purchase books, I would never read one twice, so its only library books for me. And also the fact that those books can only be read on the Kindle would not work for me as I would want to read a book on both devices (Iphone and Kindle) at the same time and you could only do that from the library.

The $79 per year is not for Library Lending, it's for free 2nd day shipping and $4.99 overnight shipping.

This year Amazon has added benefits to the membership: free video streaming and now access to their lending library.

Overnight (one day) shipping is $3.99 for Prime, not $4.99.

I find that their Prime movie selection isn't anywhere close to the selection on Netflix.

It's pretty awesome that they keep making it better. We got it for the 2 day shipping as we don't drive and it's lovely to have free shipping to our house no matter how heavy/big it is. And now there's mediocre free streaming that I assume will get better NOW THIS? I am excited :woohoo:

For any Prime experts, do you know how, if at all, this would work? My son has a free Prime account, which I know gets no streaming or Kindle lending. He can upgrade to a paid account for half price. When you have a paid account you can share with 4 members of your family in the same house. I have my own Amazon account (non prime) and my Kindle is under my account. Would he be able to share with me, and would I still be able to use my Kindle account, so I can keep everything I have bought and use the Prime lending library?
Did that even make sense??

Thanks!
