Amazing Race!

The Afghanimals came in last because of Leo. He does not pay attention to detail (the buttons on the robot) -- the field challenge from last week among some other ones along the way.

Travis treats Nicole like a child which I have no respect for, but if anyone knows which hospital Nicole works at, let us know because she is not good under pressure -- she makes me nervous -- I would not want my life her hands.

Marie actually grew on me and I wouldn't have minded if they had won. I also had no problem with their 60/40 arrangement (had they won) given she did all of the front-end work with the audition, etc. and it doesn't sound like Tim had a problem with their arrangement either.

Jason and Amy probably deserved it, though. They were consistently good and that's with even helping Nicole and Travis in several challenges.

I'm almost tempted to accuse Travis of emotional abuse. Not only does he constantly put Nicole down, but he never shows support or offers comfort when she needs it.
I know! When she made it up the ice wall with only one pick I was expecting him to tell her what a great job she did and how proud he was of her and all he said was, "Let's go! Hurry up!" when he just had a little rest while she climbed.

I find it disconcerting that you had no problem following Christian modes of modest dress in a church but would be "out of your comfort zone" following Muslim modes on modest dress in a mosque.

You're still reaching for a comparison where there is none. The tank top and shrug may be a common wardrobe in US churches but it is not a religious wardrobe :confused3.

You find my position disconcerting and I find you are perhaps being deliberately obtuse.

In US churches, there is a cultural norm (differs from one religion to another) that certain ways of dress are acceptable and some are not. We actually do have cultural norms in America. Some are intertwined with religion and some are not.

If you cannot see the difference between putting a scarf over the top of your head and covering up pretty much everything but your eyeballs, then there is nothing to discuss. If you cannot see the difference between how one culture treats women vs. how another treats women, there is no way to enlighten you.

I am 100% positive that I would rather be a female in the US, Russia, or any majority Catholic country than a Muslim country. Not even a close call. There are other religions (some in the US) in which the women are expected to dress very modestly, while the men get to wear more normal dress and I don't care much for that either. It's not so much a "Muslim thing" as a "woman thing."

Early on, Nicole got on my nerves when she whined and cracked under pressure. As the weeks went on, I saw Travis' true nature and wondered if she was so stressed and afraid to fail because she knew she'd get a butt chewing from her husband. He talked to her in nothing but negatives. He was condescending, he demeaned her, he told her she embarrassed him. What a charmer.

Even at the end when he gave a token "I love you," it was painfully obvious the (for the moment) unspoken words were, "even though you embarrass me, let me down, make me ashamed and are a failure in general."

He did not offer support. He kept putting her in tasks when he could have done them. DH asked me why he kept doing that instead of trying the task himself. I said I thought it was his habit to let her try and fail so he could treat her like dirt. He had no desire to try and perhaps fail himself. Far better to let his wife do it so he can make her feel worthless. THAT was the end goal. I'm happy they lost. Even witchy Marie was better than Travis.

I would not stay with a man who held me in such low esteem.

I agree wholeheartedly!

This is how the women dressed in the mosque:

That's a photo of two women. I don't have the episode recorded any longer, but I thought the men wore more regular garb (pants, shirt?) and did not have to cover nearly to the extent women did.

Yes, those are the baseball wives. I chose the photo to show that they were not dressed in a burqa or niqab with only their eyes showing. You do recall correctly that the men did not have to cover themselves as much as the women ... however that is a common occurrence in many religious dress.

Again, I'm not fond of it. To use Jason's language, I am not comfortable with it. No matter what the religion.

I have worn a loose scarf on the top of my head in a few churches in Europe and that didn't bother me. DH still had on more clothes than I. In no way can I compare a small scrap of cloth on the top of my head to what the women on AR had to wear, especially when the men wore shirt/pants.

If anything, in most churches I've attended, women wear less than men because suits or pants and a shirt cover more than a dress.

Be it the Muslim or Christian faith, I am not comfortable with religions that let men wear "regular" clothes while women must be covered in a MUCH more modest fashion. That is largely because of how I was raised as an American. That does not make me an ugly American....just an American. If someone from a predominantly Muslim country was uncomfortable dressing as my family dresses to attend church, I wouldn't be shocked or offended.

Finally caught up. And therefore had to miss this thread.

Travis is a jerk. I absolutely hate people like that in life. You're so strong that in that strength you have to down another over and over. :stir: :rolleyes1 I would have whipped my wedding ring at him, but maybe that's why I'm not married. :rotfl2:

I loved the guys, the Afghanimals and was sad that they were not in the final three. I lived in Japan and it was lovely to relive some things and annoying to relive things that drove me nuts.

Didn't care who won but Marie ended up growing on me. She was wild on that robot.

I imagine Travis is very ashamed and embarrassed today. I feel bad for his wife.

I did dislike Marie from early on, but she kicked hiney on that robot challenge.

When Jason & Amy kept helping the doctors, I was afraid it might cost them the whole thing. But when Amy said it made more sense to take the docs to the finals and NOT help them there, we realized she was on to something. I think the docs were less of a threat in the Final 3 than the Afghanimals would have been. By then, the stress on the docs was so high that they fell apart.

Here is what I don't get. The male doc knew his wife had troubles with the challenges when she had to work alone. So why on earth did she do the last challenge where they threw the flour. Why didn't he do it? I know in the past each person could only do a certain number of road blocks, was that why she did them?

ITA regarding the fact that Leo was the weak link on that team. He does not do well under pressure. How many times did they end up switching challenges during the race because of second guessing themselves?

I was going to ask the same question. It didn't make any sense unless she HAD to do it.

I was thinking she had to do them because he had done his share already. You know if Travis was able he would have been out there in a heartbeat.

According to Wikipedia, in all teams the guys did 6 road blocks and the girls did 7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazing_Race_23

Normally in the last leg there are 2 road blocks: whoever does the first cannot do the second. Perhaps that is what they were counting on?

That's what I was thinking. Seemed like they were trying to strategize, thinking the flour drop would be an easier task for Nicole to do and leaving Travis open for possibly a more difficult one later in the leg. It seemed like that was what all the teams were doing by sending the women to do the flour drop.

I kept waiting for the second road block!

I agree. He's a big boy, his little temper tantrums were an interesting window into his personality.
I felt bad for his wife, but I wasn't overly impressed with either of them. They both had rather unpleasant self righteous attitudes.

I agree and her lack of confidence makes me wonder what type of doctor she is.
