Those photos are amazing!

It reminds me of a story about Iceland one of my Geography professors told us. He had been in Iceland collaborating with a literature professor working on the geography of the Icelandic Sagas. He wanted to go camping with his wife but when he told some of the locals where they were going they were told not to go to that spot as there were trolls in that area, all in good fun of course. But he said once they got there the landscape was so weird and mystical that he could understand where the stories had originated, but he didn't believe a word of them. During the night, however, he was woken up by the sound of something walking around the tent and spent the rest of the night cowering in his sleeping bag not daring to go outside. He said that reading all those old stories had put his imagination into overdrive and he thought that maybe there were trolls wandering around his tent. In the morning he saw all the tracks around the tent and the herd of sheep that made them. He felt really silly and blamed it on the atmosphere.

Thank you for the photos, they make me want to go to Iceland now!! I'm curious, what time of the year does the Northern Lights shine?

Thanks for all the comment. Iceland truely is a beautiful country and all the mythology surrounding our sagas and troll and elf believe just makes it more interesting.

The northern lights can usually be seen periodically between October and April.

"Mythology"? But Freyja, the word is usually understood to refer to invented or false stories. My understanding is that a very large proportion of Icelanders actually know that there are ice trolls, elves, spirits and other huldufolk around. (As for Suejai's story, my theory is that the trolls had cloven feet, which may have left tracks that only appeared to have been those of sheep ... )
