Dog Missing For Six Years Returns Home
POSTED: 1:07 pm EDT September 23, 2004
EVERETT, Wash. -- The secret life of a dog is coming to light. A dog that disappeared six years ago from its yard is back home, thanks to an identification chip.
"Griffey," a good-natured, chocolate-colored pit bull mix, was missing six years before he was picked up last weekend by animal control officers and identified by a microchip in his neck. He was returned to an Everett, Wash., family.
The microchip reader turned up his owner's contact information. A surprised Terry and Chris Sawyer are welcoming Griffey back to their family, even though they have three other dogs now.
When Jack Massarelli saw news stories about "Griffey" he said, "that's Duke." The Massarelli family took in the dog in when it strayed into their neighborhood.
Massarelli said he's happy Duke or Griffey is back with his original owners. He reportedly told the family that he was planning to move and was worried about what he would do with the dog.
Microchips are inserted under the skin just above the pet's shoulders. Animal control officers can wave a wand over the pet, bringing up its number.

Chipping is a very good idea for all dogs and cats, not just "outdoor ones" . I fyour indoor pet somehow gets out and lost, chipping can greatly increase your odds of getting him back.
