Someone posted about cleaning the pennies used for the penny machines at Disney. I have been saving pennies from 1980 and earlier. I want to clean them, but can't remember the tip to clean them (I read it in on this board). It involves Ketchup, i believe.

I placed mine in a salt, vinigar and baking soda mix over night( yes itll fizz) and let it sit all night the next day I made a baking soda and water mix and got a wash cloth and drained all the vinigar and stuff off my pennies and placed in warm water as I took a few at a time and placed them in the baking soda mix, then I tool my washcloth and slightly rubbed them individually for just a few seconds and, walla good as new. O yea rinse the nasty baking soda off and the spray with wd/40 for an extra shine and place in mini M&M tubes.

~~~~ Sounds like a lot but its not! Love doing this-Good Luck!~~~~~~~~~
I know this one!! Put the pennies in ketchup for maybe 10 minutes and they're back to almost new. I thought mine looked a little dingy so then I "erased" them with a regular pencil erasure and my 20+ year old pennies looked brand new! I was pretty impressed that ketchup cleaned them so well...a little frightened as well since we go through so much of it! :scared1:
You can also let them soak in coke for 24 hours, rinse, then boil them for a few minutes, before wiping dry.
I'm new to this...going to WDW in May!!! Why should the pennies be prior to 1980? Does the metal content impact how the pressed penny will look?
Thanks!
Lemon juice works good too!! Just soak them overnight and polish with a soft cloth and they brighten right up!
You should use pre 1982 pennies becasue the zinc content becomes stronger after this time period in our pennies, this will cause one or sometimes several silver streaks in your coins and they are softer so they impress easier and with more detail.
I tried the salt and vinegar and the ketchup one but found that using Brasso worked the best and the most shiny.
What do you guys use to display your pennies? I have always got a few for my kids etc but soon after the trip they are lost in the house. I would like to maybe display them in their rooms.
Thanks!
They sell penny holder books at Disney gifts shops for collecting them.
Ive read that u should use pennies that are b4 1982 is this true? If so why?
If I use pennies of later date will they leave the impression? Ive never done pressed pennies b4. Do they really show the impression good? :confused3
Yes you should use Pre 1982 pennies becasue the zinc content in them is less which mean you will not have that silver streak in you penny, also they are softer and easier to press..
You can use any penny you want tho in reality
We're all set with our pennies for our trip in June. We've got over 60 pre-1982 pennies! We loved collecting these last time and it's going to be fun to add to them with the ones we didn't get on the last trip. We've always cleaned them with vinigar, salt and baking soda. It works well and is not really messy to have to clean up.
Hi we've never been to Disney World before what do you bring pennies for and how much does it cost?
the pennies are put into a machine & get pressed w/a wdw character or something wdw related. It cost .50 to do it so really.51 . They sell books to keep your coins in for a souviner. Its best to use pre 1982 pennies ive heard.
Ive never done it b4 but my trip in oct. my dd will try it. HTH
:wave:
Yes they can be Pennies from anywhere, but im not sure if they have to be pre 1982 penneis if you use Canadaina (sp?) sorry.
