Am I the only one about to panic?

Isidore is big. Isidore is close. One of the possible directions Isidore could take is here. I end up in a near-panic just trying to drive in the rain in general... I wouldn't do well at all trying to survive a hurricane, especially one that I've heard has the potential to reach Cat 5 before it hits here if it goes back out across the Gulf.

DH thinks I'm being rediculous, but I can't help it. :( Am I the only one scared to death of Isidore, even though they don't know where it's going to hit yet?

I know I'm not as close to the gulf coast as you are, but I am really scared for those who are! Most my family is in the Corpus and Houston area, so I've been watching all the weather stations!

My brother has to fly to New Orleans tommorrow on business, I'm a little freaked out by that...I hope they tell him not to go. I hope it doesn't hit you either Rajah! :(

I live in South Florida. I know your fear all too well. Try to relax and breathe. They have a habit of turning suddenly, disapating, downgrading and doing all sorts of things so try not to get too upset right now.

Please make sure you have a list of hurricane supplies and if it looks like it will come your way shop early. Make sure you have enough water. That was a big problem here after Andrew. Preparation is half the battle. If it makes you feel better plan it out all now. Pick an inside room to stay in and list what you will put in there. Make a list of hurricane supplies. Figure a way to get away should you decide to evac instead of staying. Sometimes just being prepared in case something should happen makes you feel better because you dont have that WHAT WILL I DO feeling. It makes you feel a little more in control.

I don't blame you, I'd be scared too. I freak out over the occasional tornado warnings we have here. The other day I woke to find that a tornado had touched down 5 miles from our house overnight. We had slept through the storm. Apparantly for those that lost their roofs, there had been no warning either. That scared me to death.

It sure is giving the Yucatan Peninsula a pounding, and unless it heads north, Rajah, you guys should be okay. My best is with you, Michael and all.

The only GOOD thing about hurricanes is that you usually have PLENTY of notice before it hits. Just be prepared and leave if necessary.

Be glad you don't live in earthquake country...no warnings. :)

lvs -- We already took care of that. We have at least 3/4 of our hurricane supplies already taken care of as of this afternoon, and have plans if it does upgrade and comes this direction. That helps, but I'm still a nervous wreck.

Someone tell me again why I bought a house in hurricane country?

Dan -- The chances aren't huge that it'll come this way, but Houston is one of the areas it could hit and we've got the weather warnings indicating this is a possibility. They're saying it could go across Mexico, in which case we're totally clear, hit southern Texas, hit our area, or get into the gulf and do a U-turn like one did about 10 years ago (I don't remember which one that was) and hit Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama.

I really don't want it coming here. Or anywhere. How about it just fizzles away entirely in the gulf? Would that work for everyone?

That, Michelle, is one of the VERY few reasons I absolutely refuse to live in CA. We almost moved there after getting married but decided not to.

Works for me Rajah. Let's all throw some pixie dust at it. That should do the trick. :D

No, Rajah, you are not alone. I am worried, too. Let's think happy thoughts, OK? :):):

{{{HUGS}}}

It always makes me nervous. My aunt and a friend of mine live in texas city. I was 4 when Hurricane Carla hit and I'll never forget that one. My grandmother lost her house. Though I am further out (west of houston) I still keep an eye on it. We took a beating way out here when Hurrican Alicia hit.

I'm down in League City now, not far from Texas City. Our house itself is in "Floodzone X", so I'm not worried about it flooding, really. I'm only slightly worried about strong winds blowing the house apart, but not too worried -- what worries me the most is all the glass on the house breaking. The only three rooms in the house without glass are the master closet, powder room, and utility room.

If it got to that point, you would do the plywood thing. I talked to DH about running off to my grandma's if it hits here as a Category 4 but he said NO. I don't understand - it's just stuff. I would leave it all behind in a minute.

I remember Alicia. We lost shingles, a fence, and a tree. I stayed up all night worrying. Thank goodness that the cable didn't go out!

Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. . . I would say try to avoid panicing, but definitely stay alert and don't hesitate to make tracks if it looks like it changes paths and heads your way. . Good Luck!!!

JTB- LOL!!! As long as the cable stays on, a person can survive anything. . . ;) :teeth:

Problem is, I don't think we have *time* to do the plywood thing. :( We have so many windows and no saw, plus several windows we just plain can't *reach*. We could use my parent's saw, but it would be very tricky to measure, drive to parent's, cut, drive back, mark modifications, drive to parents, cut.... I wonder if they'd bring the saw down to our place? If we could get the wood in the first place.

Sigh.

We're not sticking around if it comes this way unless it goes down quite a bit. Most people say Cat 3 and below they ride it out, but I'm terrified of just a normal Houston rainstorm. I'd be having panic attacks (and I don't suffer from them) if I had to try to sit out a hurricane at all. Let alone anything larger than 3!!

So we've got plans to pack up the kitties and run if it threatens too much for comfort. Probly won't know that until Wednesday, though.

Hmm... I wonder if "threat of a hurricane" is sufficient excuse for skipping a test in class? I have a test on Thursday...

Listen, I lived through hurricane Opal and hurricane Erin here in the panhandle of NW FL. Both those 'canes were in the same year and Opal was devasting!! I know it's hard, but try not to panic until the hurricane hits land, and when it does hit land don't panic then. By then, it may have downgraded to a tropical storm so the worse could be over. Tropical storms can do damage, but not to the point of hurricanes. As a few have said, it can make a sudden turn and come nowhere near you....'canes do that.

Stay calm, stay informed and best of luck to you.

Blessings and prayers,

Denise

Well I wrote my opinion but realized you might be new to this whole hurricane thing (and that I was being too harsh if you are). Haven't you gone through one before?

My point was... you can worry, or you can act. And 3 days is PLENTY of time to board up. People do it in a matter of hours. And if you don't have something, you BUY it. It sounds like you are coming up with excuses for not preparing and just HOPING for the best. I'm sorry, but I don't depend on luck or god's will or whatever you want to call it. And even if you are of the religious type, I've heard some say, "God helps those who help themselves."

I talked to DH about running off to my grandma's if it hits here as a Category 4 but he said NO.

"So long hubby! Hope you make it through!"
