Am I the loon or are they

I have met several teachers over the years that did not allow coats in their classrooms. The kids had lockers they could put them in. I never really knew the reasoning, mabye room? Maybe the kids with the coats on were complaining about being hot but wouldn't take their coats off? :confused3

Our school rule does not allow hoods of any kind, so the kids can't wear hoodies at all. It makes it kind of hard when its cool but not cold but she wears her Northface pretty much year round. At the high school she will attend they cannot have hoods OR pockets--such fun THAT will be.

:sad2: That's awful! I hate when school policy treats students like they are all contraband smuggling thugs.

Well, again, I do understand the bog bulky coats and really inside you don't need that, but as far as the hoodies I think you would have a revolt here. All and I do mean all the girls wear them, it is standard issue around here.

Again, I am finding out that I really do love my school system. they are great academically but they don't sweat the small stuff like hoods or pockets. We also have a rule here in FL that no school can prohibit cell phones. They do have to be in your back pack or locker and turned off, but legally they can't forbid them in school.

And as the pp above me just stated, (I had forgotten about it) I just purchased 2 hoodies for my kids. They get one every year that says their school initials and either 6,7, or 8 for whatever grade they are in.

You would hate our school system then. No hoods. Not even a shirt with an attached hood. So all the Aero hoodies that dd loves--can't wear them to school. And if they were allowed she would pretty much wear them every day.

Yep, the girls around here live in them. It is almost like wearing underwear, you just do it. everyday. lol

Our school is ok with it though, because they do actually sell hoodies.

 Hoodies are the thing here too! The kids live in them and the school sells one for just about every activity or club.

Well, coats and backpacks are not allowed in classrooms here in the JH/HS, because they have lockers. Do they have lockers to put their coats in?

OUr kids lockers are in their home rooms. Very strange I know. they are only allowed to go to them at certain times.

Oops, I lied, DD just saw this, and the rule has changed, they go to lockers whenever they need to now. When DS was in 6th grade it was only a couple of times during the day.

The only hoodie issue DD has at her middle school is for those hoodies with the Ipod earbud/drawstrings.

If you wear one of those hoodies, you have to turn your pockets inside out, to show that you don't have an Ipod hooked up. Other than that, hoodies are allowed.

My kids' teachers had weird rules like this last year. They were not allowed to wear any kind of jackets in the classroom. One day the teacher sent DD10 (then 9) down to the nurse's office saying that it was hot in the classroom, and DD didn't want to take off her light fleece jacket, so she must be sick.

The nurse called me to ask me what the deal was. I told her that DD was not sick at home, and that as far as I am concerned, at age 9, DD was old enough to decide whether she was hot or cold, and that she would wear or remove her jacket as she needed to. I also told her I thought it was a little power play DD was pulling with her teacher, and that the best thing to do would be to ignore it. The nurse agreed with me and I didn't hear anything else about it.

I can understand teachers not wanting kids to wear big, bulky, noisy jackets, but a light jacket or fleece, come on!

sounds like a power play on the teachers part too :)

OP did you get clarification from the teacher about this?

Oh, I know. The worst of it is that it was one prinicpal that is no longer at the school that implemented that rule and it just hasn't been changed. I guess enough people haven't complained.

Dd and her friends do too on the weekends and holidays. A hoodie, a "go with" t-shirt and a cami in a coordinating color underneath. Every Saturday and Sunday and any holiday.

I'd actually call the Principals office first to ask him/her to clear up the schools position on this since it might not even be the teachers rule but the schools rule. I have a hard time believing that all outerwear is banned because that's endangering the children in cold weather so either something got lost in translation or your son's teacher has flipped her lid and needs to be set straight.

We had something vaguely similar at the elementary school level where wearing anything resembling jackets in classrooms in ALL the schools were banned because kids were using them for some kind of gang related issue. Eventually they relaxed the ridiculous rule but while it was in effect I had a really hard time with my son who refused to wear his winter coat because it wasn't as cool as his hoodie. I could see how a kid would try to convince a Mom that ALL outerwear was banned because mine tried really hard :rotfl:

Right now the schools also have a rule that the kids can't wear any shirts with little symbols on them like Izod has because that was somehow linked to gangs too.

Ridiculous happens too, in my DD's school last year 'Silly Bands' were banned just because the Principal didn't like them... and I used that as an excellent starting point to talk about grown-up bullies.

You also have to take into consideration what part of the country the OP lives in.. Not allowing heavy, bulky coats in class - for the entire school, maybe..

But no hoodies, sweaters, etc., could be a serious issue - even more so in this case because the kids have to go outside to get to the cafeteria and according to OP, often wait outside for a period of time because the line is so long..

I don't know about others, but when I'm cold, I'm not at the "top of my game".. If I were sitting in a classroom that was too cold for me it would make me extremely tired, I would be yawning my head off non-stop, and my brain would be in a fog.. So not only would it be a waste of my time (in terms of learning), but a waste of the teachers time - in terms of teaching..

Many schools have had their budgets slashed significantly this year and one way they save money is to keep the thermostats low, so the rooms are probably a tad chilly to begin with - even before the really cold weather arrives.. And if they operate like the school I used to work for, at night the thermostat is lowered even further and it takes a decent amount of time for the rooms to warm up once school is in session.. Something to think about for those who live where very cold temps aren't an issue..:)

Upon clarification from the teacher though - if this is "her" rule (not school wide) that would not fly with me.. If it is school wide, I would give up the heavy coats, but fight like heck for the kids to be allowed to wear sweaters and such in class..

It will be interesting to hear what the bottom line is with the OP's school..:goodvibes

Actually, schools all over the country banned them, because kids were spending an incredible amount of time trading them in class, and they were a distraction. All of the teachers I know loathe them for this reason.

We just went to a dress code this year.. no coats, hoodies, shirts with hoods allowed in class.. sweaters are OKAY as long as they are hoodless and pocketless and are blue or white with no design, logos on them and they must be worn over an "approved" shirt (ie polos in blue and white) I spent a FORTUNE on school clothes this year.. money I didn't really have but really what was my choice? ... none. I've lost sleep over this crap.. first time they come in "non uniform" clothes they get detention.. no jeans are allowed of any kind, no cargo pants either.. shoes are allowed to be white, black, blue, brown but again NO logos of any kind designs are okay as long as its not like a nike swoosh... dont even get me started on gym clothes... they are impossible to find unless you buy their clothes and I refuse to spend 20$ on sweatshirts or sweatpants.. that's 40$ a child and with 3 in school 120 is out of the question for just 3 shirts and 3 pairs of sweatpants.. every gym day I hold my breath the little logos they have on their pants/shorts wont be seen...

The lockers at DS' school are too small to hold bulky coats or backpacks. It's a good thing that we don't have such rules.

OP it boild down to school or county rules. Check out what those are and if the teacher's no coat rule falls outside of the rule, call her on it. I'd deal with her in person or a letter before I'd go over her head to the principal.

My DD 5th grade teacher actually wore them. Her students gave them to her and she wore them almost every day.

Oh, I remember your little problem with the gym clothes, at least I think it was you. Wow, I don't know how you do it. I would be a crazy.

If I remember correctly the schools around here started the no coats or backpacks in the classrooms after Columbine. But we don't go outside to change classes in most of the local schools here.

wow, some of the school have really strict dress code rules for public school! I understand the rules for private school and even the public schools that have uniforms (however, I disagree with the gym clothes rule). DD14 is in 9th grade and attends a public HS (kind of. Her HS is public but you must take an entrance exam, have excellent grades and be accepted to attend- this year 1000 applicants and only 165 accepted). Anyway, they have a pretty lack "dress code": shorts must be fingertip length, nothing with inappropriate/foul language or pictures, no midriff tops(belly shirts), no sleeveless shirts. That's it! They can wear jeans with holes in them(as long as nothing "personal" is hanging out), they can wear hoodies, sandals, flip flops etc. DD wore flannel pj bottoms and a hoodie to school today (God, I hate when she wears her pjs in public) the pjs were sold by the school (school colors with mascot name down the leg).
I would be p.o.ed if they said no hoodies especially since I just paid $32 for her basketball hoodie and $20 for sweats!

at our schools kids aren't allowed to wear coats in class either. they are allowed sweaters, hoodies but no coats. I think they are too bulky, take up to much room and are to easy to conceal stuff like phones, i pods etc.

I have a hard time getting my kids to take a coat at 45. I don't think that is to cold to worry about being out in for a few minutes.

:thumbsup2

I can see the reason for no bulky coats, etc. I personally do not think 45 is cold enough to need to wear anything, but I know each person's cold tolerance is different. (it's 10' here right now and we all just wore sweatshirts out tonight...). So I would question the no hoodies or sweater thing..
